Summerfeet Posted April 5, 2011 #1 Share Posted April 5, 2011 Does anyone know if they will cash them on board for me? They did with any other cruise I was on but I'm new to NCL.
VideoTech Posted April 5, 2011 #2 Share Posted April 5, 2011 I don't see why they wouldn't? They are basically cash, once properly endorsed.
retired rascal Posted April 5, 2011 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2011 I have cashed many American Express traveler's cheques on NCL...don't know about other 'brands.' Sometimes I've had trouble getting small bills...like $1.00's, but no problems gettting $20's. I bring a pile of $1 bills with me for tipping starting at the airport, port, room service, excursions, etc. and always save some for the return trip. EIBCaLen Posted April 5, 2011 #4 Share Posted April 5, 2011 Oh yeah! Travellers cheques were used long before credit cards, American Express introduced their cheques way back in 1891. If you deposit unused cheques into your bank account the teller cancels them with a stamp that reads "Not used for purpose intended", sounds like my whole life :p
johnql Posted April 5, 2011 #5 Share Posted April 5, 2011 From NCL's FAQs: US Traveler's Checks can be cashed onboard and are the same as cash. Personal checks will not be accepted, nor can they be cashed onboard.

Barb Nahoumi Posted April 6, 2011 #7 Share Posted April 6, 2011 Best to cash them on board, because some of the businesses in port might not except them.
garycarla Posted April 6, 2011 #8 Share Posted April 6, 2011 Best to cash them on board, because some of the businesses in port might not except them. We just take a couple thousand in cash along with credit cards. But, yes, you deal with them.
auntierobin Posted April 6, 2011 #9 Share Posted April 6, 2011 Another quick question about travellers cheques. Can you use them as a cash deposit on your account when you get onboard? I am trying to think of ways of not carrying 2k in cash. We always use our credit card, but have discovered that when we are travelling after the cruise (sometimes for a couple of weeks) that all of the holds on it can be a pain. I am just trying to minimize it. We will still use a credit card, but thought that we would try and keep our balance available for other uses. Thanks for your help
CruisFran Posted April 6, 2011 #10 Share Posted April 6, 2011 We have used travelers checks many times on our cruises. One other hint, if the reception/purser's desk is busy, the casino is a good place to cash them (no line/s)...even if you are not gambling. Enjoy! saltmom1 Posted April 6, 2011 #11 Share Posted April 6, 2011 And don't fill anything out until you are in front of the person who will be cashing it or they are no good. also bring a photo id when you cash it
johnql Posted April 6, 2011 #12 Share Posted April 6, 2011 Another quick question about travellers cheques. Can you use them as a cash deposit on your account when you get onboard? From NCL's FAQs (my bold): How do I pay for onboard expenses? For your convenience, all shipboard expenses are charged to NCL's special onboard credit program. Sign up on the first day of your cruise, by establishing your method of payment with Visa®, MasterCard®, American Express®, Discover®, Diners Club®, travelers checks or cash. If you choose to settle your account with cash, a deposit will be required in advance. You may also use your debit card; however, please be advised that NCL obtains pre-authorization which some banks may hold for up to 30 days. Summerfeet Posted April 8, 2011 Author #14 Share Posted April 8, 2011 Does anyone know what the preauthorization amount is? I don't recall that on any of the other cruises I was on.
