We always secure the cruise booking first. Sometimes it can take a few days of going back and forth until it is sorted out, and then when you agree to the booking you can have it on hold for a few days till you sort out the flight.

Agreed, though the approach depends on the purpose of the trip. If it's longer haul, then I'll probably do other things as well, so the flight is more important. If it's a shorter one, or one way, then the cruise first. Sometimes the air fare will go up in a few days negotiating, but it's usually under $100.

For various reasons, I have never booked a cruise where I have had reason to place it on some kind of "hold" - have always simply been asked to pay a deposit by some time in the future and then final payment by a certain date

So- have never been on the lookout for such a concept of "keeping it on hold" for a few days ( which is all it would take to organise an air booking) -- So , how does that work??.

1 I email a TA and ask for a quote/availability of an advertised cruise.

2. They reply in due course with a price and availability

3 I reply to then and say I would like to book such and such ----

what is the process after this??

SID, I missed out on the $999 Volendam on 10th Oct, but got an oceanview on 17th Oct for $1,299 for 2 people, including flights to and from NZ. NRMA cruise club. :-)

that is fabby...I had asked if we could get oceanviews for our cruise but they said they had none available...would not have minded paying extra for a bit of a view....anyhoo...am pretty pleased that we got a good price for the 4 of us...and we so need that holiday :o

Well this is our 2nd cruise and for our first one - we enjoyed staying in the cabin and relaxing....but hubby reckons that he can cope without a window....think he just is keen on being away from here :p

Have you got any details re your cruise as yet? We booked the cruise online - they called us back and said someone would contact us to get more info...and we have not heard anything back as yet. Emailed them yesterday so hope to hear something today as I need to start looking at where to park the car, etc. They said we had a booking - as we had paid for it online but other than that, we have not heard anything as yet :(

This isn't directly cruising related, but if you use frequent flyer points to get to your cruise destination it is :D

Velocity Rewards are offering 20% bonus points when you transfer points from your Award credit card valid from now until 31 October 2011.

Cool deal. I just did for my flight to LAX :p

Hi Debsta, I had a quick look, but can't find that particular special with airfares and for 2. I only see $999 per person and no airfares. What am I missing???

Hi Tamarah,

Did you look at the Diamond Princes prices for this year to NZ? time for you to cruise again. Rhapsody has some good prices for solos to cruise too.

I've got nothing booked . . . keep looking but when I see the solo prices, I get depressed!!! When I saw this one, I got my hopes up, but I missed out!!!

Solo cruising is so frustrating when you have to double the fares ... in the US they seem to have a lot more specials . . . but I do understand why it is this way!!! Thanks for the tip re Rhapsody Sue, I'll have a look at the solo prices. If anyone comes across any good solo cruises, please keep me in mind. Are there any particular places I should be looking for solo specials . . . I don't seem to see many at all.

Try with a search engine on the above, it might yield something.

At least sign up for some newsletters to get the deals early.

Good luck!

Hi Topaz, I find it hard to find anything really for solo cruising LOL!!! I get quite a few newsletters, but your rarely see solo specials. I just like the look and price of this one, but alas, I was too late. Will have to check here daily!!

Tamara, it sux to be single (only for cruising costs though LOL) :p

I cruise single often and just have to suck it up if I want to cruise. There are a couple of companies that do solo/single cruises and have a matching service if you want to share. I couldn't think of anything worse, but it might appeal to you to get costs down. Get Sue/Rugbypopsie to give you my email and I can give you the agents names (obviously we're not allowed to do that here) but as it's a specialist service I'm sure I can say that (right Walt :D)

Also I just keep checking a particular TA's website pretty much daily to see what pops up. Quite often they do, you just have to keep your eyes peeled, then I ring around. Time consuming but can prove beneficial.

Has anyone seen or heard of any good airline deals to the USA or UK?

I think those routes fares have increased considerably over the past year.

Jilly:)

Hi Gold Coast Cruisers we booked our airfare for 1800 return to new york a couple of months ago - last week they brought out a special $1400 return with Virgin (now called VAustralia). Cheapest I've been able to find besides flying the china air stuff.

Hi Debsta, yeah, it does suck, but like I said I can understand why - even though I don't like it LOL!! That's what I need, info on the specialist cruise companies so I know where to look as I really don't see much at all.

No, I'm with you, wouldn't like cruise matching service to share - I've only shared a cabin with someone I didn't know (hello Rugbypopsie, my roomie) and that was because you all talked me into it, so I didn't really have a choice. And it was the best thing I ever did, but I felt like I really knew Sue (and you guys) so I took a huge leap of faith and am so glad I did.

I'll send you an e-mail, thanks so much, I really, really appreciate. I hope Walt doesn't get upset!!! If you get into trouble, just blame me LOL!!
