PENGUIN67 Posted June 22, 2011 #1 Share Posted June 22, 2011 We're planning a long cruise that ends in Beijing, and will have lots of luggage. On arrival, we plan a multicity tour for a week or so, with luggage quantity restrictions. So, we wondered about how to ship the not-needed excess luggage from Beijing back to the US before we start the land tour. Any suggestions/experiences? greatam Posted June 22, 2011 #3 Share Posted June 22, 2011 We're planning a long cruise that ends in Beijing, and will have lots of luggage. On arrival, we plan a multicity tour for a week or so, with luggage quantity restrictions. So, we wondered about how to ship the not-needed excess luggage from Beijing back to the US before we start the land tour. Any suggestions/experiences? Are you flying out of Beijing back to the USA? Or can you fly to Beijing from wherever on one of the many discount Asian airlines and leave your luggage at your Beijing hotel?? I am in the international shipping business and do a lot of shipping out of China. The cheapest will be the China post office, basically parcel post. Fedex and UPS will probably price out at over $1200 for 3 50 pound suitcases depending on where in the US you are shipping. Post Office-30 days transit time, Customs clearance and about $3-400 for 3 50 pound suitcases. As a alternative, EMS (a division of the Chinese post office-more like our Priority/Express Mail) is somewhat cheaper than FedEx/UPS. You MAY have to box your luggage for FedEx. You will DEFINITELY have to box your luggage for UPS unless you use one of the luggage services. This will NOT be cheap. If you can get back to Beijing anyway you can and leave luggage at your hotel, you will be FAR better off. Most Asian hotels have no problem holding luggage. Hoyaheel Posted June 22, 2011 #4 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Or- pack light, with multi-purpose clothing. Cheaper to pick something up in a port if you need to than to ship surplus luggage home.....
maryann ns Posted June 22, 2011 #5 Share Posted June 22, 2011 We were in a similar situation. We ended our cruise in Shanghai. We left our luggage there and continued on the land portion of the trip. It did mean that we had to come back to Shanghai, but flights are cheap in China. We stayed in a private room in a wonderful hostel for $28/night. They kept our luggage for free for one week and for a tiny charge for the second week. It was certainly worth it. It is easy to book your own flights in China. We used ctrip.com Do not book your flights until a few weeks before you need them as they get cheaper closer to the flight time. You can get lots of help with this on Trip Advisor. I would also suggest you pack light. We had one medium suitcase and one small backpack each but it was still too much. You really can get along with less, even on a cruise. PENGUIN67 Posted June 22, 2011 Author #6 Share Posted June 22, 2011 Further research shows that the Beijing Airport offers luggage storage for 20-50 RMB/day ($3-8 US), depending on size. So, if our post-cruise inland tour starts from PEK and then returns to PEK for a flight back to the US, it should be possible to do it that way. Two large bags for 8 days would cost about $124, which is much less than what others have said. Anyone else actually used this service?

Better to start a new thread, perhaps on the board for the cruise line you are considering. Princess board is under Cruise Lines P-Z. EM
