Can 4 adults & 1 child take 1 cab from JFK?

Does anyone know if 4 adults and 1 child can take one cab from JFK to Manhattan? I see that the fare is $45 for 4 people, and I'm hoping that we won't have to spend $90 to take 2 cabs. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, 5 passengers can use one of the larger minvan or SUV type taxis...but there is also the issue of how much luggage you have.

You will most likely have a longer wait for one of those. Sometimes you get lucky, but more often than not there will be a wait.

the rule even for a smaller cab is one child under 7 may be carried in the back seat for up to 5 people including the child but with luggage it will be a real challenge in one cab even a minivan.....

 

From Driver Rule 54-15(g) (in PDF):

The maximum amount of passengers allowed in a yellow taxicab by law is four (4) in a four (4) passenger taxicab or five (5) passengers in a five (5) passenger taxicab, except that an additional passenger must be accepted if such passenger is under the age of seven (7) and is held on the lap of an adult passenger seated in the rear.

The $45 fare to Manhattan is deceptive - you would have to add tolls and tip. I believe I've seen $60 as the final estimate for a cab from JFK to Manhattan.

 

What would a car service cost? Folks recommend Dial7, Carmelimo, and Arecibo - could you get some quotes for a vehicle that would hold 5 people and luggage?

Dial 7's Web site quotes $60 plus toll and tip for a minivan with 5 passengers and 5 pieces of luggage...so you're looking at a total of $75 or 80.
