Teen curfew--NCL policy, or ship's?

on our latest cruise in late june on the Jade that curfew was in place as well but i did see teens hang around much later and it was not enforced at this point .

Sounds like the classic "Chair Hog" approach taken by cruise lines--they put policies in place to assuage cruisers of any concerns, but in reality, they are unlikely to enforce their own rules becasue they don't want to antagonize their paying guests. If you are not going to enforce the rules, what's the point in having them? At least be honest and change them---e.g., unescorted teens 17 or under are not permitted in the public areas of the ship between 1AM and 6 AM if they are determined to be disruptive to other passengers by the staff of NCL. Multiple violations of this rule will recult in (fill in the blank).

I will have to look at my dailies from last year's Alaska cruise on the Pearl. I seem to remember that the curfew was on it last year because I showed my son. You have the information and confirmation to make it easier though. Enjoy your cruise. We went on 8/8 last year and had excellent weather!

According to DS there is a fleet-wide curfew for 17 and under of 1am unless accompanied by an adult. So Mom, you're off the hook! Now you can blame it on the cruiseline!

Thank you for asking your son! :D I hope he is enjoying his vacation!

This is always going to be a case by case and ship by ship judgment call. I'm sure that teens that are behaving themselves are granted a little leeway. But when you have kids that are acting up, then the ship personnel has the backing of publicized rules in order to return them to their parents and room.

He is! Thanks!

My last one night cruise on the GEM there was a 1am teen curfew. I saw on another thread that this was also in place for the OP cruise. It wasn't on my GEM cruise in Feb.

Is this a new NCL policy, or is it a HD decision?

This will make my personal curfew for my DD a lot easier for her to handle (when all of her friends claim that came come in "whenever").

BTW--sailing on the Pearl in August, so Pearl specifics would be appreciated!

Just off the Gem this past Sunday and there was a 1 AM curfew in place for the 7 day Bermuda cruise.

Hi Robyn,

I found my Pearl Dailies from last August and the 17 and under curfew was not on it. I really thought that I saw it last year. In any event, you have some recent information and evidence that it does exist.

If your daughter has any problems with whatever curfew you impose you can tell her that there is a 16 year old boy and a 13 year old girl on the Gem (while you are on the Pearl) going to Bermuda that has a father that is so strict that he imposes a curfew of much earlier in the evening unless they are with him. :D

Enjoy your cruise! We loved the Pearl and Alaska!

I love GEM, and the Bermuda trip is wonderful--I am sure you'll have a wonderful time.

And at least on the GEM, they have the curfew (although it sounds like you won't need it anyway!)

Just got back from the Sky and there was a 1am curfew BUT it was not inforced. I was on the pool deck with my teen son and saw other teens without adults roaming around after 1am. They were behaved just hanging around chatting so i guess they were left alone. I sailed with RCCL in the past and they had an 11pm curfew and definately inforced it.

on one of the two cruises I was on..the kids were absolute animals..nothing seemed to have been done about it..Food fights in the hallways..running screaming banging on doors flipping the dials next to the doors, stealing the room service orders from doors, sitting on stairs and blocking them..I could go on..NOTHING was done about it either by staff or these kids parents..Most of this was done well before 1 am..but I think a curfew that is STRICTLY enforced as well as being thrown off the ship would send a clear message..I don't want to sound like a jerk..but infringing on my enjoyment and the enjoyment of others really bothers me..

I am glad to say that I never experienced anything like this, but on my last cruise a fight erupted among some teens--over soccer (European cruise).

My DD filmed it, and the staff reacted quickly and with authority.

Just curious--from what departure port did your bad experience occur?

Hi Robyn,

These one nighters (and two next yr!) from NYC are great, aren't they!! It was nice meeting you last year. Sounds like you and DD will have a lot of fun on the Gem!

Just to confirm Crew Mom's info, when I was on Pearl in Apr. for 2 wks they did have the teenage curfew policy in place. I remember reading the Daily thinking there couldn't be too many teens on a 2 week repo through the Canal.;)

You can tell DD that the way of getting around the 1 am curfew is to stick with Mom. The policy refers to "unaccompanied by adult" teens.:D

Have fun!:)

OK--have you lost your mind? Are you trying to ruin my vacation? Spending all day with her on our excursions is enough Mom/Daughter time for BOTH of us! LOL

I told my teenage son (17) of this new curfew and he was not at all happy. The teen club closes about 1:00 and they would always go to the Blue Lagoon to get a late night bite before heading back to the cabin.

For the life of me I couldn't figure out why these teens were going to need to be out after 1 in the morning anyway. The only thing I could figure was that with everything closed they were only going to hang out and get in mischief anyway. Which would have been a no brainer for me as a parent to say "I don't care what your friends are doing, I don't care that you are bummed about it, I don't need NCL to set a curfew, you will be in by such and such a time". Or of course the old "if little Johnny jumped off the bridge would you need to" (LOL I promised myself it would never be said but did find it helpful at times when I was frustrated and lost for new things to argue with).

So I want to thank you for giving me a logical and reasonable reason why these teens would need to be out at this time and what they might be doing. This makes perfect sense to me and I can understand why your son would not be happy about this. Perhaps this is something that NCL never thought about when setting the times for the new fleet curfew. Thats too bad.

Unforunately it was probably implemented because of problems that they have had with the ones that did get into mischief. So in reality your son probably has past teens and their choices to blame for the NCL's need to put this in place.

Yeah, it takes just one bad apple..... lol In all actuality, I can see why this could be a problem with some teens. It is unfortunate that the teens that were not creating chaos have to be deal with the curfew. However, such is life.

Actually, since I had a teenage son who was out late, I would occasionally check on him. Usually, I found them at Blue Lagoon getting a late night bite. During this time, I never saw any teens creating any problems. We always tended to cruise during times where there was a high volume of teens onboard as well. That being said, I guess we were lucky we were sailing with decent teens if it is a fact that there were problems on other sailings. :)

Maybe a solution to this would be to volunteer to meet your son and his new friends at the Blue Lagoon at 1am a couple of nights. You can sit at another table and they can still have that extra "hang-out" time yet still be with an adult.
