Celebrity Eclipse..BORING??

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm 28 and my hubby is 30, we are looking to cruise on the Eclipse, but I'm having a hard time finding fun things to do on the ship, and definitely wont be using the lawn.. What attracts us to this ship are the prices, we can get a balcony room for the price of inside cabin on the Oasis of the Seas, and the food looks and reviews great too on the Eclipse.. But are we going to be super bored on this ship? Also is there a great night life we can enjoy?

You should go over to the Celebrity board, where there will be more info.

I sailed on the Solstice last year - it was wonderful, but does cater to an "older" crowd. Night life was sparse, even the casino wasn't hopping.

But the ship was gorgeous, pool area very nice, not a lot of smoking allowed, even on your balcony, specialty restaurants fabulous, martini bar a lot of fun. Lots of places to go, things to do.

If you are looking for nightlife, bars, dancing and loud parties, I have heard that Carnival is the cruise line to use. But I have never been on one so don't know for sure. For those of us who have already done those wild parties years ago, Celebrity is just fine. in other words - been there, done that, learned our lessons and don't want to do it again.

We have sailed alot on Royal Carib, love this cruiseline when we are taking our teen kids along because there is ALOT to do and you really don't need to sail on a giant ship like the Oasis for plenty of activities, try looking at Liberty of the Seas or something similar and you will probably find better prices too.

When we are going as a couple or with friends we LOVE Celebrity and especially the Solstice Class Ships, I do agree there is not a bunch of activities and we thought the ship was kind of sleepy after second seating. We are not big bar people so that does not appeal to us. We loved the lawn, did not think we would be we enjoyed playing lawn games and the glass show was Wow! Definitly a more relaxed cruise. The ships are fabulous!

Would not want to discourage you from trying Celebrity, but sounds like you might like RCI better, maybe X in the future?

Enjoy planning your perfect cruise

My wife and I are 28 and 35, respectively, and our cruise line of choice is Celebrity. Granted, we are definitely NOT the frat-boy-kegger-party-types, so I don't know if our perspective may differ from yours. As has been stated, I've heard that Carnival is ideal if you're looking for a drink-and-puke-party at sea.

Anyway, we have always found stuff to do on and off a Celebrity ship. There are plenty of bars and lounge areas, plenty of food - much better food (IMO) than RCI or Princess, and no annoying announcements. My favorite aspect of X, especially compared to RCI, may be the "uncrowded" feel of their ships. And although probably less frequently, they still do have the cheesy trivia and newly-wed games, and things like that.

To each his own, though...

What do you consider fun Nitka? It's hard to tell you if you will find fun things without knowing what that means. (Personally having a library means I will be perfectly entertained regardless of what else is available - but I know I'm not a typical 30 yr old.)

You should never pick a cruise based solely on price alone. You should select a cruise based upon what you want out of it within your travel budget. That requires you to do some research. Unfortunately many people book a cruise without doing their homework and sorely regret it later. I love Celebrity. It is an upscale mainstream cruise line. They have beautiful ship and excellent dining. However, their entertainment caterers to older Americans. Passengers are mostly early to rise; early to bed and late night entertainment will be quiet and refine. Will you be bored? Maybe. You shouldn't expect a late night happening disco. You will be on the young side of the demographics for Celebrity. I'm sure there will be some young folks on the cruise especially in the Caribbean, but I think most passengers will be 50+. My suggestion for someone in the late 20 or 30 is go with either Carnival or RCCL. Both Allure and Oasis are still very pricey (I realize) so you should look at RCCL other ships like Serenade, Freedom, Mariner, Voyager, etc. where you can find comparable pricing to the Celebrity ship. Also, RCCL ships have plenty of nightly entertainment, lot of day time activities and a more diverse age group which is a better fit for younger adults. I'd recommend Celebrity if you were going with a group of friends/family, nightly activities weren't important to you and/or outstanding dining is required or you were going strictly for the ports and couldn't find any comparable itinerary.

Hey Nikta,

We are a couple 33,34 that went on the Eclipse last December. The ship is very elegant and beautifully appointed. Food was great and Qsine was an experience like non other. We had a blast at night in both the casino and clubs but we can have fun just about anywhere together. We were in an Aqua class stateroom and felt that the service was terrific everywhere we went. The pool area is very nice and we enjoyed many days lounging there. We also enjoyed the relaxation room. One of the best things is there is very little smoking, non on the balconies so you can actually enjoy yours.

The one thing I will say is that it is an older crowd and is not the "party boat". I would say we enjoyed that aspect as we were looking to be pampered and relax.

We are booked on Celebrity again for April on the Silhouette as we again are looking for relaxation and pampering. You can see from my signature that we have our share of party cruises booked. Really depends on our "mood" how we book.

Hope this helps!

Celebrity is a beautiful cruise ship line. Part of the experience is the ship...don't knock the lawn until you try it..I thought it was ridiculous until I went up on almost the last day of our SClass ship cruise..and really sorry I waited so long to explore it. Fun things to do??? Enjoy the balcony with your DH...plan "exciting" things in ports...relax and appreciate the finer things offered on the ship..I don't think you will find "great" night life.

Unfair second hand information about Carnival and unfair comment. Carnival has it's moments but it depends on when you go and for how long you go. A 3 or 4 night spring break cruise may be a little to wild for some, however, I have heard that a week long cruise off sping break is really appealing for the 30 something crowd.

Celebrity is a great line, however, it may not be what you are looking for, give some consideration to Carnival amd RCI and read the reviews section of Cruise Critic. In my humble opinion there is not much of a night life on the Eclipse for your demographic!

Enjoy!

Ken

The Molecular Bar after dinner is really cool - amazing original drinks - almost a laboratory! After that Quasar a really cool night club in what they call Entertainment Central- maybe some of these posters haven't done these!?

I'm glad the OP started this thread as it's made me think Celebrity is right for me. I was a bit concerned that it would be too crowded on the Eclipse if it is full. (This from reading various reviews and that, well, 2900 people is a lot!)

WE are in our 40s and would like a quiet refined experience. I've heard the food is good on Celebrity but I just got the feeling it's going to be too crowded and noisy.

The other concern is that the balcony staterooms look really really small. Are they ok and are the balconies large enough to sit out on?

Hi:) I have sailed Eclipse (though only for 3 nights) but have also

been on Solstice (sister ship) and as for being crowded and noisey?

Nope, I have never experienced either one. I mean there may

be some noise...music and stuff;) but as for excessive noise? I have

never had any problems. And the crowds? I have always found

spaces without feeling crowded. The OP mentioned not trying

the lawn......it is really lovely up there. There is a bar with wonderful

wicker chairs (with cushions).....a drink, a book, beautiful views.....

What type of cabin are you normally used to? A regular balcony

has 2 chairs and a table and the cabin itself is about 200 sq feet.

There are some "Hump Cabins" with bigger balconies. But as for

being "really really small"? I guess it depends on what you are

used to having......I don't find them small at all:)

I think Oasis would be a better fit for you. There is not much nightlife on Celebrity compared to RCI. While the martini bar is often lively after late seating, not too much action after midnight elsewhere. Also, a lot of the activities are geared towards the Lawn Club. There will not be a lot of people in their 20s and early 30s on board. Celebrity is a great line if you are seeking a more upscale, pampered, relaxing type vacation but if you are looking for action and nightlife, RCI is a much better fit, especially their larger ship such as Oasis. Price is not a good means to use to pick a cruise line .

I think a lot of it depends on when you're going. I disagree with the posters that seem to indicate Celebrity trends older. I'm 39 and my wife is 32, and we've never felt out of place. Our kids -- ranging from 9 to 15 -- LOVE Celebrity.

The key, though, is when you are planning on going. If it is during a school break (summer, mid-spring, Christmas), you'll have a younger crowd because there will be more families with 20-40 year olds in the mix.

And, by the way, we spent over two weeks on a Panama Canal cruise on Celebrity last Christmas / New Years, and I don't recall one second of boredom. Indeed, I always bemoaned that I couldn't do all I wanted to do on the ship!

LOL, you can disagree, but it is a fact that Celebrity has an older average demographic than RCI and Carnival. Sure on summer and holidays there will be more younger cruisers than the rest of the year, but Celebrity overall has an older demographic.

I didnt think we would spend much time on the lawn club but we ended up playing baggo, bocce and other games most days up there. The bar up there is also very nice. Smoking on one side though so if your sensitive to that it kinda sucks. But we smoke Cigars and dont mind out door smoking so not a biggie for us.

I do tend to agree that X is mostly older folks, Newly Wed and Nearly Dead, as the unofficial X slogan goes. However that doesn't mean that you cant have a great time.

The one thing we did get frustrated with was that they had music trivia almost every day but it was ancient stuff. We begged for some newer topics, (80s, 90s ect). At least something that we were alive for!! we did take apart the old folks in 70s trivia though really erked some 40 something group that they got schooled by a group of twenty five year olds(at the time).

Entertainment on Celebrity Cruises is definitely a lot more low key than Carnival, NCL, or Royal Caribbean. The Norwegian Epic, although a homely ship, has one of the widest range of entertainemt options next to the Oasis-class of Royal Caribbean.

Nightlife on Celebrity reminds me of hitting an art deco trendy chic hotel where there are trendy bars and cute places to get a drink. Not a lot of actual 'partying' going on but people enjoying their apple martinis and listening to a live jazz band, nightclub style pianist, or classical music quartet. During the day the ship takes on a 'country club' feel and lounging poolside or in the library and frequenting trivia contests or art auctions take a back seat to non-existent hairy chest contests, belly flop contests, and flash mob dancing exhibitions.

I agree that Celebrity Cruises tends to attract an older set of passengers, not as old as you might expect on Holland-America, and maybe about the same as Princess Cruises, but no where near the 'party' crowd one might expect on Carnival.

Check the "live from Eclipse" thread currently running. I haven't had time to look at it lately but the couple have two children ages 6 and 9 so they're not ancient! They have some wonderful videos which would give you an idea of life on board Eclipse.

Indeed, but life aboard the Celebrity Eclipse during the Summer vacation months and in Europe. It can be substantially different for a Winter or Fall cruise ship doing 7-night Caribbean when school is in session.

P.S. Hey YVR Cruiser, how are things now since the Celebrity Mercury departed? Hope the Celebrity Century is some consolation. Do you still get out there to watch her comings and goings?

Im glad I read this thread. I was looking into Celebrity. Im 51 and like the "partying crowds". Guess I wont be going on Celebrity real soon. To bad too because I really like the looks of the Solstice class ships. They will probably be to boring for me. Dont get me wrong I dont party like I used to. Just like being entertained. I do have a question though. I dont mean to make this sound rude but did most of you people quit living when you hit 30??? Life is to short! Live a little!!!! Kick it up!!!!

As the old saying goes, different strokes for different folks. Like you I am in my early 50's, but I prefer quiet environments, upscale and sophisticated settings when I vacation, and as few partiers and children around as possible. I vacation primarily off-season when I know it will be quieter and don't consider vacationing on cruise lines that 'kick it up a notch' like NCL and Carnival. On my last cruise I never stayed up past 11pm and never visited the nightclub. But that's just me. I like relaxing and listening to the ocean while reading a book, enjoying tea or a cappuccino in a relaxed setting listening to a classical music quartet, or attending enrichment lectures.

Everyone is different, and each cruise can be a different experience even for two people on the same ship.

Thanks to all for your advice, greatly appreciated!!! :) After reading all these we have decided that the Oasis will probably be the ship for us. We are energetic but also like to relax and to be entertained, stay up late and sleep in, we have kids, so our first cruise ever has to be something fun because we are going WITHOUT our kids for the first time ever! So excited and having a loud noisy ship sounds great because we hardly get out much with having little kids and we are big city folk, so yes we love the night life and loud places :) Still I feel the Eclipse sounds really appealing because it will be a much more pampering quieter ship, but it does sound like night life will be pretty boring. I'm sure we will find quiet areas to relax as well as be pampered on the Oasis. Either way what ever ship we pick I know we wont be disapointed! We might try the Oasis, and if we dont like it, next one will be Celebrity, but we will FOR SURE not try the NCL, too many bad things we've heard and read about it, even the ships dont appeal to me, the whole "free style cruising".. Celebrity and RCCL sound more upscale, cant wait to go on our cruise in April and have fun, sleep in, eat eat eat, soak in the pool and salerium, explore the ship, and at night stay up til 3am and do it all over again the next day! Sounds like it will be a BLAST!! :D

nitka, Congrats on booking Oasis of the Seas! I know several people who have cruised her and the Allure of the Seas and they keep going back to this class of ship because of the wide selection of high energy options for entertainment (zip line, rock climbing wall, wave riders) as well as the relaxing solarium and more upscale adult dining venues. I hear the shows in the AquaTheater as well as Central Park are amazing.

The one constant that I hear about the Oasis-class is that because of it's size and diverse options it never felt crowded as the passengers were spread out all over the ship. Cruising in April do expect that any ship you pick will have a lot of kids due to Easter and Spring Breaks.

Either way I hope you have a great cruise!

Thank you, but we havent booked it yet, we will soon :) and kids dont bother me, as I have my own so I'm used to having them around, but knowing that Oasis has kids areas like the h2o zone, that helps to kind of contain them in one area, and with having a big ship such as Oasis there will be plenty areas that we can get away to where kids arent allowed ;) I think the solarium will be my favorite place to relax, just hope it wont be too crouded, looking forward to the night life too;)
