checking in a home

Does anyone purchase a calling card to use on the islands to check in at home? OR...just pay the extra and use their cells?

I used to use calling cards but it's getting harder to fine phone booths where they work.

So I use both cell phone and e mail.

We use to go barefoot sailing frequently and I still have the calling card I purchased years ago because none of the phone booths would accept them. I've found e-mailing is much easier and cheaper.

In most ports, you can find inexpensive internet cafes and even free wifi. So email is the cheapest way to keep in touch.

In the past I've asked crew how they contact home and where they got their calling cards. I've purchased cards on land and made calls from phone booths at the terminals - per suggestion from one crew member.

And, if you can get the time zones coordinated, there's Skype. Even if you can't see each other, it's only 2.3 cents a minute for calling cells and land lines from your laptop/netbook.

On most ships Skype and Voip are either disabled or the bandwidth is so slow, that they don't work. Don't count on Skype on any cruise ship.

This would be with free internet. If you can use skype on a ship (many block it), it will be another 30 to 75 cents per minute for the ship.
