Purpose of a Hotel Director

The captain is responsible for navigating the ship, ensuring passenger safety and security.

The Cruise director is responsible for your entertainment and the hotel director is responsible for everything else.

He or she has one of the most important jobs onboard the ship.

In our past cruises (not on Celebrity), we have been fortunate enough to have dined with the hotel director twice. The only higher officer we could have sat with was the captain.

It the whole facility was on land and they didn't have to worry about sailing a ship then they wouldn't need the captain and the Hotel Director would be the top person and more or less would have similar responsibilities. He/She is in charge of all guest related operations. Cabins, housekeeping, guest relations, food and beverage, entertainment, excursions, retail operations, casino and probably a few other departments I'm not thinking about.

What is the function of a hotel director on a cruise ship? I have been on 3 cruises and have never figured this out. Thanks!
Just think of all the things involved in running a hotel on land and you know the functions of the hotel director.

The hotel director is responsible for managing the housing, feeding, and entertainment of the passengers, but not the operation and navigation of the ship.

Good Man to meet when you are on Board. On the Constellation 2-3 weeks ago, I was walking back to our cabin and saw three officers checking fire emergency cabinets. Being somewhat(!) outgoing, I started a conversation with them. Turned out the one Officer was the Hotel Director and the other two were his assistants.

He was very friendly, introduced all the officers to me, gave me his card and said if I had ANY issues with my cabin or service anywhere on board to please let him know. I have 28 years in Field Sales experience and I truly believed he was serious in this offer. I was very impressed to say the least.

He along with the Captain, Beverage Manager and one of the top Chefs came to our Cruise Critic "Connections" Party also. Was the best officer attended gathering I have seen.

On the Eclipse, it's a woman! Sue Richardson from England. She came to the Connections party as well as the Elite happy hour, and was very visible on deck. She was very friendly and obviously quite capable, as we had a wonderful cruise!

Aside from moving the ship(the captain and his crew), all the things that you enjoy on the ship are directly managed by the cruise director....food, cabin comforts, housekeeping, public venues, etc. Meet your cruise director. They want to make your cruise great. If you need anything, see the cruise director.

Incorrect. The captain is responsible for everything on the ship. Think of him as the CEO. Under him are "vice-presidents" for segments of the ship's operation. The Chief Engineer is responsible for the operational side of the ship and its equipment. The Hotel Director/Manager is responsible for the "soft product" side of the ship - the non-mechanical. As such, entertainment is in the domain of the Hotel Director. Further, the Cruise Director works for and under the hotel manager.

If you ever want to confirm, look at the number of stripes on the formal uniforms and you will see that the HD has more than the CD.

Incorrect as well. Food is directly under the Food & Beverage (F&B) Manager, Housekeeping under the Chief Housekeeper, and your entertainment is under the Cruise Director -- all of whom report to the Hotel Director.

The CD is the public face of the hotel department, and some try to give the appearance of omniscience. They have defined and limited, but hectic, roles.

Was that Jamie by chance? He's by far the best and most engaged HD I've ever met.
