Passport Getting off ship

You won't need your passport at all in the Caribbean....bring your DL ashore for your photo ID...it's the same size as your ship key. And, in most cases, it's waterproof! Leave that passport in your safe!

You will only need your ship's key card to get back aboard. That has your picture embedded on the magnetic strip, and when they swipe it, your picture comes up on the screen.

As for what you might need to get ashore, a photo ID is usually enough. Russia requires a passport as do a very few other places. If it is not absolutely needed, leave it aboard so it doesn't get lost, stolen, etc.

Some ports now require a "government issued picture ID" in additon to your key card. We always take an expired drivers license (no worries if it gets lost) with us when we leave the ship. In some ports like St Thomas they often insist on seeing the picture ID. In Europe we seldom have been asked for anything other then our cruise card.

Can you use a photo copy of your pass port when you get off the ship in ports off call to get back on the ship. Thanks

You show your passport when you board the ship, and after that they only care about your ship ID.

Some local piers check IDs when you return to the ship, but what they care about is the ship ID too. They just want to keep the pier clear of people who have no business being there.

Yes, a photo copy of your passport is fine.

There are some ports where they ask for a photo ID in addition to your room key card when you re-enter the port area, and a photo copy of your passport is ideal to use for that purpose.

If it is a port where you need to take your actual passport (such as St. Petersburg), they will always let you know in advance, but there are very few ports that do. So unless you are specifically told that you need to take your passport, it is best just to leave it safely locked away in your safe.

If it is a port where you plan to drive, also bring your driver's license. Otherwise you don't need that either.

That's at the ship check in, but many ports have port security check points outside the individual piers. They do require official photo ID before passengers can even get back into the pier area to reboard. This has happened to us at least a dozen times, especially at US ports and including once before 9/11.
