Entertainment and shows

Hi guys

I am going on my first ever cruise. I am taking my mom with me (56). She does not speak English and likes to sleep very early.

My question: From what I read I understad that after dinner cruise line provides entertainment and shows. What kind of shows are those? Would they be suitable form non- English speaker? If it is singing, dancing, she would be fine, but of course if it is comedy talk show she would get bored. What time are those usually?

Just want to know so I can plan accordingly.

My plan is to do dinner at 6, show, hopefully around 8, by 10 go back to the cabin, let mom sleep and me go out to discover on my own., at least some nights.

It all depends on the cruise, and the day. It can be singing. Or singing and dancing stage shows, or comedians, or magicians, or a number of other entertainers.

You will get a daily schedule, and you will be able to decide if the day's entertainment will work or not.

As stated above, it would depend on the cruiseline. From what I understand, most have the production shows that are based on singing and dancing. So if she likes that kind of entertainment, she should enjoy herself. I would suggest staying away from comedians for obvious reasons.

Sometimes if there's a huge group onboard from a specific country, there may be entertainment in their language. A couple of cruises ago, there was a big group of French-speaking passengers. There was activities for them (I remember seeing a white board someplace, but since I don't know French, I couldn't tell you what it said) and one of the channels on the in-cabin TV had French programming, including movies in French. Just for fun, we were watching The Incredibles on that channel (we've seen that movie so many times, we could know much of the dialogue) and also part of Bewitched.

If the main show on a particular night won't work for her because of the language barrier, you could take her to one of the lounges that has live musical entertainment. On our last cruise there was an excellent Latin band that played in a lounge after dinner and I loved to watch them play and see people dancing. There was also a pianist playing in another lounge and a guitarist/singer in another.

Have a great cruise.

They do have comedians but they have more shows that people can enjoy without speaking English. The cruise line understands that its passangers are diverse.

Your plan sounds workable. You may have to make a few adjustment depending on what is shown on the saliy schedule given to you every day by the ship so you know when & where the activities are.

My husband has issues with English, and for him it was not easy. The shows were the best, there was a comedian only once, the rest of the shows were singing, dancing, juggling - all easy to understand.

We also went to watch dancing classes - even without participation it was fun.

TV has programs in different languages. They may show movies on large screens too.

Other than that, he spent his time by the pool (is there free ice-cream in the buffet on your cruise?), in casino on penny slots, on shore - we like port-intensive cruises.

There will be also some shopping on the ship.

Does your mom like to read? Bring a couple of books. If she goes to bed early, she'll get up early, but there is hardly anything scheduled before 10 am - unless she likes excercising.

Usually, if you have late seating, then you will go to the "before dinner" show. If you have main/early seating, you'll go after dinner. On ships with "anytime" seating, you can pick your dining time according to the show you wish to attend.

Your plan should be just fine....she can get to bed early, and you can hit the nightspots or casino!

Thank you so much.

Everyone is very helpful here, very nice forum.:-)

We are planning Carribean, port intensive cruise.

Very interesting that there are dance classes, I was not aware of that, I study dance in my free time as a hobby and sometimes perform so it is great to hear there are dance classes, I can not stay without dance class for more than couple of days so very nice there is opportunity to stretch out bones.
