RoyalDiamond Posted May 19, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Just off Rhapsody today, completing the first Alaska cruise of the season for this ship. We entered the casino, and the digital sign stated the due to state laws, the casino would be non-smoking for the entire cruise! YAY! Also, we noticed no indoor smoking anywhere on the ship, not even in any bars. No one seemed upset about it, and it was a pleasant surprize, since we do like visiting the casino. So, I assume this policy will be in place all summer long on Rhapsody.

She is so pleased that there was no smoking allowed anywhere on the inside of the ship. It's something, that as ex smokers, we never stay long in the ships casino, because we don't like the smell of left over smoke!:D Personally, I would love to see it fleetwide, but there are still too many that like to smoke and gamble......which is why the casino has alway been off limits to us. Jsim2011 Posted May 19, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Great news! We are sailing on Rhapsody in 4 weeks. I will actually spend some time in the casino this trip now. I usually avoid it at all cost because of the smoke.

gabbygrrl Posted May 19, 2012 #10 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Maybe RCI is seeing how well this goes over with cruisers!?!? I hope it works out well as I tend to avoid the casino and Boleros and any other indoor smoking venue. Sounds like the Rhapsody may be our next cruise, after the Navigator, if they stick with it.:)

We got home 1 week ago from our first T/A on the Serenade. Loved it buts lots of smoking in the casino.

Maybe if they get enough comments thanking them for reduced/limited on board smoking, they will reexamine their smoking policy (I hope~). :D

gkm Posted May 19, 2012 #15 Share Posted May 19, 2012 This is Celebrity's policy too but they take it a step further. There's no smoking on the balconies which is wonderful! There have been times I could not enjoy sitting out on my veranda because of the smoke from my neighbor. I hope Royal will extend this to their other ships! It works well on Celebrity. RoyalDiamond Posted May 19, 2012 Author #18 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Do you happen to have his last name so I can update the current CD list? Gosh, I knew someone would ask that! LOL. I really don't remember. If I do, I'll let you know. I think I remember reading that he is French Canadian (and definitely has an accent), and used to be part of the cruise director's staff on Oasis at one point. But, his first name is definitely Patrick. Once the drinks from the new Diamond and Concierge lounges wear off, I may recall more!
RoyalDiamond Posted May 19, 2012 Author #19 Share Posted May 19, 2012 Hello Jim and Peter;Sue and I trust you had a great time. Where did they put the Concierge Lounge. We got home 1 week ago from our first T/A on the Serenade. Loved it buts lots of smoking in the casino. Hey Tim and Sue! How goes it? Great to hear from you. The Diamond lounge is on deck 6, aft. They "walled off" one corner of the Shall We Dance lounge, and made the Diamond lounge. The Concierge lounge is on deck 11, beside the Viking Crown. Once again, a wall or two was erected, and the lounge created on the side. The view from the Diamond lounge is fantastic, with a view in the very aft of the ship. The view in the Concierge lounge is great, too. The port side wall is basically the windows that made up that side of the Viking Crown, and you can see out the port side, and down on deck 10. RoyalDiamond Posted May 19, 2012 Author #20 Share Posted May 19, 2012 This is great news!!!! How was the cruise in general? I am interested in how the cabins are after the refit??? Thanks!! *** Fantastic cruise. First sea day was kind of rough, but nothing too bad. We had the "new" 8596 aft corner junior suite. (we had to fight to get it back after were were relocated with the room renumbering, but that's another story...LOL). New carpet, new curtains, new balcony furniture, flat screen tv, etc. During the cruising of Tracy Arm, it was sunny and stunning! We were able to make it as far as possible, with a perfect view of Sawyer Glacier in the sunshine! (cold, but sunny). The only disappointment for me was the casino. LOVED the non-smoking, but the machines were not updated at all! Kind of boring. I thought they would have put in newer modern machines during the dry dock, but the only thing they did was change them to "tickets" instead of coins. Still a fantastic cruise, however. Arizona Cruz Chic Posted May 19, 2012 #21 Share Posted May 19, 2012 TY RoyalDiamond.....sounds like you had a great time, glad you got your corner aft back...like you said, that's a whole other story! The new cabins sounds great! Looking foreword to seeing the CL and DL. Our first Alaska cruise on the Vision in 2002, our first 2 nights were also rough, that was out of Vancouver. Then 2 years ago on the Radiance out of Vancouver it was smooth sailing all the way as we repo'd to San Diego. :) ***
Petunia1950 Posted May 21, 2012 #22 Share Posted May 21, 2012 Alaska has no such non-smoking laws. See http://dec.alaska.gov/eh/fss/Smoking_Home.html. What else is being done because it's the "law"?
klingoncruiser Posted May 21, 2012 #23 Share Posted May 21, 2012 Interesting... but like someone pointed out... I don't buy it being a law. Seems like yet another lie to cover a test run of going non smoking. (Might cause a lot of cancellations if they actually were honest about it.)
CodyC815 Posted May 21, 2012 #24 Share Posted May 21, 2012 Alaska has no such non-smoking laws. See http://dec.alaska.gov/eh/fss/Smoking_Home.html. What else is being done because it's the "law"? A few sites claim that there is a ban of smoking in entertainment venues, which would cover the casino. Here's one such site. A step forward, that's for sure. http://smoking.uslegal.com/smoking-regulations-in-alaska/
Rare BillOh Posted May 21, 2012 #25 Share Posted May 21, 2012 Due to state laws? So we can expect the same thing when we sail on NCL to Alaska? I will be THRILLED!!! :D Just from a curiosity standpoint that phrasing interested me with. State laws, affecting the entire cruise? Or is it just RCL's way of passing the buck? I know they do somethings based on the laws of the home or departing port.
