Why We Left NCL?

Where is Sticky? this thread has been hijacked and if I were the OP, I would be upset. Start a new thread about smoking and let posters respond to the original question. Question: When was the last time Op posted once you all took over the original thread?

Finally. I don't know who "Sticky" is, but thanks Kaboochi. Other than DW remarking about the AC, the last post I (the OP) made was when a "one-time wonder" decided to get personal (back about post eighty-something?). About post 50, I was sorry I ever started this thread.

If hackles had not flown up , I think I made it clear: 1) we LIKE many things about NCL, 2) we are not looking to get smokers banned to some corner of hell (well, maybe a couple ), and, 3) we just thought there might be some option that would allow those who puff, and those who don't, to have balconies WHERE THEY DO NOT BOTHER ONE ANOTHER! Obviously, even a mention of anything to do with smoking is, as someone described it, too "flammable".

Enough. Please. No more.

We are done folks. No really. Shhhh!

Say goodnight, Gracie.

Not sure why you are quoting me. I never once told you to continue to smoke. Glad you feel you won't likely suffer another heart attack. I won't smoke in a non-smoking close in space with you, unless you choose to be in a smoking accepted NCL on-ship casino. And then if you approach it with respect we can work something out.

Happy you are content with your decision to quit. Unlike apparently some smokers my smeller is just fine and like everyone else I know what smells I like and what ones I don't and move away from those I don't (or in my case, ones that bother my allergies or ones I don't like). I spent many years before I smoked around smokers and sorry, it is not a smell I have issues with, but do understand how some would not like the smell. Anymore than, even if I could be around scented products, I don't like the smell of most perfumes/colognes/aftershaves etc. And absolutely hate the smell of someone after they have drank a beer, I find that quite a repulsive smell but hey to each their own.

Perhaps I misunderstood your post but I thought you were suggesting that you didn't believe that smoking is a health risk. Maybe it is, or maybe it isn't, I choose to follow my doctors advice and not take the risk. I really don't care if people smoke. Being in a smoke filled space doesn't bother me anymore than I did when I was a smoker. If we happen to be on an NCL ship at the same time, chances are we'll be in the casino at the same time because that's where I spend alot of my time. If you're not smoking a cigar I have no problem sitting next to you. BTW, I hate the smell of beer too.

What I can't figure out is why so many people can't use their balconies because of the smoking and when we are on our balcony and there is smoking next to me (and I do know for a fact someone was smoking) that I can't smell anything. What's up with that.......

I know - I have NEVER smelled smoke on a balcony

Would someone explain to me what rude and insensitive persons still say "knocked up"? And if you don't understand that a pregnant woman should not be exposed to second hand smoke, you need to get an education! Pleeeez confine your rudeness to your home!

I cannot help you. If you really believe that the smoke is detrimental to the unborn kiddo, well, you cannot be helped.

Last year my husband and I splurged and got an aft facing balcony cabin on the Dawn. The ship is in port 2 1/2 days. We were so excited about this trip and our room. But we couldn't sit on our balcony because the guy next door smoked like a chimney.

I was very angry about it because we did not infringe on his rights while he was on vacation yet he infringed on ours.

Plus every morning we woke up to the smell of smoke coming through the AC system.

It is not what I think I should have to put up with and it is a big thing to a non smoker.

It is our only complaint ever when we cruise.

Tracy

Tough cookies. he paid for his balcony where it was permissable to smoke!

First off, please indulge us and try not to flame; we are posting this hoping that someone from Norwegian actually reads these threads.

[i When the Dawn shifted to Boston, we looked at the Star, but decided to give X a try. Without getting into subjective differences, other than entertainment, the clincher for us with Celebrity is the non-smoking policy. NCL's new policy stipulates smokers can only do so on one part of the upper deck - or on their balcony; a minor inconvenience for those who smoke, but for those next door? I'm a former smoker and generally believe in live and let live, BUT:[/i]

If we spend $3K of our vacation money to pay for the balcony room we love so much, what happens when our NCL neighbor(s) smoke like chimneys, and we can't even open our sliding doors? And we found it does happen.

Really? Can't one side/section of the ship be balcony-smoking optional?

We would book another NCL cruise in a heartbeat - especially the Breakaway (!!) - if we knew we wouldn't have to worry about our balcony being downwind of an ashtray. Is there really no answer to this?

Our two cents. Thanks.

Many years ago, NCL was smoking on one side and smoke-free rooms only on the other. Then they had $$$ infusions, went to smoking anywhere, and reduced the $$$/day/pax food allotment, went to open dining and lost us. :( Shame, as we liked the line until then.

And the only difference between a smoking and non smoking room was an ashtray that they happily gave you in a non smoking room. In those days one dining room had smoking tables, every bar a smoking area, ashtrays by every elevator. You could walk around the ship inside smoking. Today they don't allow smoking everywhere in fact the smoking areas have decreased every year since you decided to leave. Today the smokers are down to one side of the outside decks, the casino, and their balcony. Unlike RCI or HAL none of the regular inside bars have a smoking area.

They are never going to please everyone but this may as good as it gets.

Or you could stay inside when they are smoking and go outside when they're not - probably 50 minutes of each hour? - or are you just unlucky and get the chain smokers who live on the balcony 24/7 and smoke 12 an hour?

Please everyone stop littering this thread with anti smoking ("helpful advice") posts - that's not what the thread is about. Go spread the good word elsewhere where it's being asked for. (And it doesn't work anyway - we all know you have to want to stop yourself for it to work)

When I was a smoker I personally chose to smoke on the balcony when the neighbours were not on their balconies as I felt conscious that they mightn't like it. Equally if I was on the balcony smoking my "one an hour" I enjoyed it and would have expected that they could stay in their cabin for those few minutes if it bothered them.

Now I'm an ex smoker I don't really like a neighbours smoke on their balcony wafting by so I go back inside. 5 minutes later problem over.

Most people are doing lot's of other stuff most of the time on a cruise. You'd swear from reading the posts on here that everyone is living on their balcony all day long.

Most of what's on here is just hysterical anti smoking bias. 2nd hand smoke in the open air is bad for you? - give us a break! :)

Where's the LIKE button when you need it!

Agree completely... other lines manage to promote smoke free balconies.

Very true and they seem to be doing very well. However, most lines/ships allow smoking on their balconies, and they also seem to be doing very well. I smoke, so I choose a line that allows me to smoke on my balcony, if I desire to do so even if we are not often in the room to even be on the balcony.

We love Norwegian but tried Carnival this year. The cruise was great and that includes the service, food, everything. They must have a different smoking policy though. Every time I opened our balcony door, our next door neighbors were outside smoking and it stank. My wife is sensitive to this because of breathing issues. My question is why do people still do this? When I was young everyone did it. Today, we know it causes cancer. Would you stand in an asbestos storm because your neighbor liked to shred it? I suspect not. I suppose it is going to take a while for the cruise lines to catch up to US sensibilities. Even in NC we can't smoke anywhere we wish.
