On Board Account - Cash

I would like to know this too.

We sail on the Liberty this October and we would love to use cash as to avoid thelarge nasty hold that Carnival puts on your credit card. We need the card available as we are driving to the port and are using it for gas.

Nope, no limit, you put down what you think you will use, and then you can add to it as necessary when you need to. Anything not spent will be given back under your door as a check the last night. FYI, you can use travelers checks too if you don't want to be carrying a lot of cash.

On a 7 day cruise, Carnival asks that you put down $200 per person.

"Recommended" deposits per sailing duration:

2-4 day cruises: $100 deposit pp

5-8 day cruises: $200 deposit pp

9+ day cruises: $350 deposit pp

Yes, recommended, but not required. You can put as little or as much as you want. We have never had any questions from the pursers desk.

Depends how soon you want to be able to start spending. You can get at least 1 drink at the bar before you put your cash up. I normally go to guest services as soon as I board, if there's a long line, come back later. Casinos and shops aren't open till you sail anyway, so beverages are the only need for a while, or you can drink the free tea/water.

We do cash accounts (although we usually put the "recommended" deposit or more so we don't have to go back and put more on).

When checking in, let them know you will be doing a cash account. Some ports have kiosks that allow you to deposit your money and set up your account. The ports I have sailed from though, have required us to board the ship and to go the pursers desk (guest services) and make our deposit there. We are usually onboard early and go straight to the GS desk and get it taken care of. The lines are usually short at that time. If you wait, the line will be long... lol.

I have read somewhere that you have so many hours before you have to put cash on your account. I can not verify this since we usually do it as soon as we board.

On the last night, we usually go close out our account before heading to our cabin (or during the late dinner seating. I have never ran into a large line during this time.) You can also wait and they will deliver a check to your stateroom sometime during the night.

It's all very easy!!

We also immediately go to either the S&S kiosk or GS the moment we embark but you have 24 hours to set up the account

just off the pride 7/29 and used cash. at the port before you board you can add cash or credit and they have different lines for each one.

Thanks for posting these.

Herf, I knew there was a certain amount of time, but since I have never done it, I wasn't sure of the exact amount.

queen, thanks for posting this. I am wondering when I cruise in December how they will do ours.... at the desk or on board. Last time we cruised from NOLA, they didn't have the kiosks.

A related question: I plan to put some OBC via Funship dollars onto my account. I'd prefer to do a cash account. I will have already prepaid much of what I intend to spend.

So, I should be able to purchase fairly quickly with the OBC, correct? If not, no big deal, I'll go to GS as soon as I board and put cash on my account.

If you have OBC, you should be able to purchase as soon as you board. If you plan on putting cash on your account and you board early be sure to check and see how the line is. When we board, its virtually non-existent. Last time there was only 2 people in front of me. Took me less than 5 mins to get it done and once that was out of the way, we were ready to go!! The longer you wait, the longer the line... lol.

A couple of months ago, I started putting money into my OBC. Call the Bon Voyage Department - buy Funship Dollars in $25 increments and have them put right into your account rather than mailing them to you. I have all the $$ I need in there now - and it was like a "savings account" because you can put $25 or $50 or $75 (etc) every payday. Loved doing it that way!

FWIW you can also put cash in your account as you are checking in and do not have to do this only atcustomer service. in 2011 Miami had a designated station for this during checkin, but in Galveston 2012 any terminal could do it.
