credit card or cash?

Recommended Posts

My husband and I will be sailing on the Conquest in June. We have credit cards, but would prefer to use cash for the sail and sign card. We want to use our cc for shopping. Will we have any problems doing this? What will be the minimal cash amount required? We will start with $1000.00. Any response will be great!!!!

Thanks!!!

For the best answers you should pose questions relating to specific cruiselines on the boards here at Cruise Critic dedicated to those particular cruiselines.

Good luck and have a great cruise!

I have used cash on my cruises. On Carnival its 250pp. That includes your tip. When the money gets low you will get a letter in your cabin stating you cash is low. You will then have to return to the pursers desk to add more funds. If there is any left over at the end of the week you will get a check in your cabin the last night which can be cashed at the pursers desk.

Small purchases onshore can only be had by cash. CC can be used in bigger stores but the vendors will only take cash.

I have always used cash. Go to the Pursers Desk and depostit it there. It will show as a credit. You can put any amount down but when it gets less the $25.00 they will contact you and ask for more or your CC. As above there is a minimum amount to start. You will have to put money on both accounts so that if one of you is somewhere else the other can still get a drink or whatever. Its great for kids as you can limit the amount for them each day.

Another thing to consider is your bank card. We took very little cash with us on our cruise, then as the need arised, we went to the internet cafe and did a cash withdrawal at the ATM. We walked on-board with $100, our Visa and our bank card with $1500 slotted for the cruise, ended up going home with $$ to spare.

just a thought....

The ATM on board there is a steep fee- 5.50 plus what your bank charges.

And if you get a cash advance at the casino it will cost you 3%.

You can also keep your account on your credit card but pay off all or part of the balance with cash before the cruise ends.

When we first started taking cruises, we carried a lot more cash and travelers checks. We love that the cruise industry has gone more toward credit cards for tips--makes it a lot easier for us.

Not all lines charge fees for cash received from the cashier in the casino - Use your sail card, and most lines handle it same as any other purchase on your sail card.

I vehemently object to tips being added to your onboard account. I do not think the individuals who recieve the tips are getting the full amount that way-these are people who do not have checking accounts or check cashing priveledges! Please, take the tips off the onboard account and give them cash that they can use. I know it is a hassle the last night running around with the envelopes but they have served you faithfully (I hope) for the past few days. I have been on 6 cruises and to this day I regret that I had to give checks (only two were cashed) the last night on my first cruise to the crew because I ran out of cash-I thought they could cash them-and the ship did not do automatic tipping nor did it have a functioning ATM.
