Strategy for Non Smoker

For people who are sensitive to cigarette smoke like myself, I thought I would share the strategy I have used on the Nieuw Amsterdam that has work well for me.

I book an inside or ocean view cabin, I avoid the aft pool and casino (so either use first or third deck for showroom or main dining room). While I would say Holland has one of the more liberal smoking policies, I have found that Holland America passengers have been the most respectful of following the rules for only smoking in the designated areas.

I find most smokers congregate on the starboard side of the aft pool as per rules (I have kids so don't use the adult pool). This strategy can save you money as well (inside cabins are cheaper and casino can be money pit). My experience is I have never smelt cigarette smoke in hallways.

Ironically never had smoking issue on ship just cigar smoking on beach at half moon cay. Anyways just posting as the nieuw amsterdam certainly ranks up there with some of the best cruises we had (I have been on Disney, Carnival, and RCCL).

We are veranda people so it doesn't work too well for us.

It's a gamble we take but if I can't open the door, I feel 'boxed in'. I need to feel fresh air when I want it. :)

For someone who doesn't care about that, your strategy is a good one.

self righteous, judgmental, annoying people is to spend the winter in a hotel suite in Honolulu and stop caring what superior people like you think or want. Did anyone here ever consider how negatively the demanding, self important passenger has managed to turn many long term passengers away from HAL? Because you have helped alienate many of us. HAL crew wish they could join me.

btw, sail, after all your cruises i'm sure you know that leaving a balcony door open to, as you say, 'enjoy the breezes,' is NOT ALLOWED ON A HAL SHIP. it disrupts the a/c and heating systems. my, my how anti-smokers also want to disobey for their own pleasure. just sayin'

I do know that Dr.Dawg. I think you may have confused me with someone else. I surely know to not leave the veranda door open.

Here is the pertinent part of what I wrote:

No problem as I know it is hard to keep track of just what it is that everyone said especially in some of the 'more charged' threads. :)

I just was trying to say I like access to fresh, sea air by opening our door, going through it to our veranda and closing the door behind myself.
