The 'Cheers' Program has created

a large number of sloppy drunks in the main dining rooms. We just came back from a cruise on the Victory. It was a spring break and I expected lots of college kids drinking and carrying on. What surprised me the most was the number of non college age people who had purchased the Cheers program and came into the dining room night after night all drunk and loud and basically just obnoxious. These were not students. One evening there were two couples, one of the ladies was obviously drunk and being so obnoxious, the table next to them asked to move. That same night, not far from the 4some, there was a couple I would say at least in their late 40s, the woman could not even walk without tripping over her own feet. They both were very loud, so loud that everyone in earshot knew that they were 'on their 10th drinks thanks to the Cheers program'. This was the first night of the cruise at about 6:00pm. Even the wait staff was a bit disgusted by the behaviour of these groups. Kind of sad, that you have to drink that much to have a good time. Wonder how the dining room staff feels now that they have to deal with all of that intoxication. I feel bad for them.

Drunks will be drunks, regardless of the Cheer's program

I agree - it won't matter whether or not they purchase the program. Wonder how many people actually purchase the program. I have been on several cruises without the program and have seen people falling down, having to be escorted back to the ship etc.. Some people just don't know how to drink responsibly.

Planning on trying out the cheers program in May!

How do you know they were on the cheers program? Did they have a big C on their forehead or did you assume they were. No drunk person has ever effected my cruise. Just relax and enjoy the cruise.

If your main goal is to get as drunk as you can, then the Cheers program is not for you. On some ships (like Victory), you get cut off after the 15th drink, regardless of your appearance of drunkeness or sobriaty. You cannot be served any more. If you are not on the Cheers program, you can keep going indefinitely, or until a crew member decides you've had too much.

I plan on purchasing the program on my next cruise, and getting my money's worth, but I doubt the 15 drink limit will be an issue for me...

If you get the Cheers plan and don't come anywhere close to the 15 max, that's still a lot of booze! To break even, you'd have to drink 8 beers or 5 martinis per day. Wow! I couldn't drink that much every single day. Maybe I'm just a lightweight, but that seems like too much.

I used the following estimate to decide that it would pay off for me:

1 bloody mary in the morning - $8.95

2 glasses of Moscato at dinner - $15.00 (2 X $7.50)

1 after dinner drink - $5.50 - $6.50

4 beers during the day - $23.00 (4 X $5.75)

This is already more that $49.40, and it didn't even include the 15% tips.

I'm SURE I will drink at least that much!

same as our basic planning so there are two bonuses - 1) I will try some foofoo drinks during the day instead of the beer and 2) we know ahead of time what to budget for

I agree. We would never buy the Cheers program because there's no way DH and I could drink all that booze and remain upright. We're satisfied with our wine we bring aboard and smuggled. However, I do see people getting their money's worth and Carnival will continue to offer the program FTYW (faster to your wallet).

I will respectfully disagree. We have cruised long before the Cheers program, and were at an early seating with my young children when a male passenger sat at the table next to us and promptly threw up everywhere, he was totally intoxicated. It isn't the Cheers program, it's the people:eek:

I also got off the Victory recently and there were definitely some drunk people... I don't think they were all on the Cheers program though. Cheers is great for a short cruise like that, and I got it. It was perfect, some drinks out on the Lido deck, a glass of wine and/or martini with dinner, and some drinks in the evening... worked out good for me, and the only day I felt tipsy was embarkation day. I never saw anyone in the MDR drunk like that thank goodness though the lido deck was totally different.

ETA: Carnival actually made money off me, because without the Cheers program I would have snuck alcohol on board and probably limited my drink purchases substantially. I liked the thought of knowing how much I was spending and not feeling mildly stressed every time I ordered a drink (because I would have)

But can you do 4 beers a day on a port day?

I to have come across many drunks in the dining room and this was before the Cheers program. I am still debating on whether to get it or not for my July cruise. DW doesn't drink as much anymore so it might not be worth it.

You should pass , not unless you want to stay drunk .

I don't think your wife would enjoy her cruise :p

Oh I didn't let them ruin my cruise, I enjoy watching drunks make fools of themselves. And no, they don't have a big C on their foreheads, they have little white stickers on their sign and sail cards. However, that is not how we knew they were part of the 'Cheers' program. Apparently, a lot of them are very proud of it, and make sure everyone around them knows they are a part of the program and how much they have had to drink that day.

I actually felt bad for the staff having to deal with that. Yes I have seen my share of drunks on cruises, just not so many in the main dining room.

You guys realize that Carnival is just following suit of the other lines by offering this. Its not a new concept. Its been around for years. Was just on Celebrity which is suppose to be all proper and they were pushing their drink programs before we even boarded. And guess what they don't have a 15 drink limit.

I was on an NCL cruise last year. As soon as we got on the ship and headed to the Lido deck we noticed a large group with lots of kids. The adults looked already hammered. It was about 1pm. At 4pm they had muster drill. Everyone was at the assigned place and ready to hear the quick instructions. 4:10..nothing. 4:20 still waiting around 4:30, the group comes in, with drinks in hand. Staff didnt say a word.

The next night hubby and I had a late dinner in one of the MDRs. 4 of the woman from the group were seated next to us. They were making inappropriate comments about the wait staff. One waited came over and asked if the would like something to drink. One woman said "What the F do you think?" He stood there and took it. He asked for their room cards (to charge the drinks.) Nobody could find theirs. He then asked for the room #. One girls managed to slur out "Charge it to my room, Ten twenty one." He left and the woman became so obnoxious I went to the podium to be moved. I am a mom of 3 teenagers and Im used to fooling around, loudness, laughing etc.. I wasnt there for a quiet dinner, but could not tolerate the loud F bombs every other word, the rude comments about the waitstaff etc.. I didnt tell the hostess why I wanted to be moved. I think she knew already.

A few days later, we saw the daughter of the woman who gave her room # in the elevator with us. She knew my daughter from the kids club. My hubby asked her how old she was and asked if she was having a good time. She said yes. The door opened to our deck, 8, and she got off with us. I said "Oh, this is our floor, 8" She said "I know!" I said "Oh, your on 8 too?" She said yes :confused: (How could she be on 8 when her mother gave a room # of 1021?).

So, fast forward to the last day. We were leaving the ship and some of the group, including the woman and daughter were with security and an older couple (70's ish). The older gentleman (could have known them/been in their party, complete strangers.. I have no idea) was waving his billing statement and yelling "Over Ten Thousand Dollars" The woman was crying saying "Im sorry, Im sorry". Security was saying something, but he was calm and I couldnt hear his words. Unfortunately the line I was in, to get off the ship, was moving quickly and I didnt see the outcome!!!

Im assuming they charged everything to this guys room. If so, dont know how they got over 10K just by stating a cabin number ??? But really, can you drink 10K worth in a week??? (With your kids onboard???)
