Is it possible to purchase the 3-day L'Occasionnelle card at the airport?

When I search for information about the card, it says the fare is valid on the P.-E. Trudeau/Downtown shuttle (747).

Yes you can, and yes it is valid. This link has info - in summary, vending machines in International Arrivals area and you can also ask for help at the STM info counter or from the uniformed employees near the bus stops.

Does anyone know of a good breakfast place near the Nelligan Hotel that isn't ultra expensive?

Le Gros Jambon was my hands-down fave brekky in this part of town; they closed early this year but have since reopened, same owners, with the new branding of L'Orignal Canteen (they also own the restaurant l'Orignal, which is a game-meat-heavy place). I haven't been since the change, but it was excellent before - and their new FB page says they're still doing breakfast though the only menu pic so far is of a weekend Brunch one. Contact info's there if you want to check with them directly to be sure.

Most stays around that part of town we've had a breakfast-inclusive hotel rate so I've never had to find anywhere else good - worst-case, the nearest Timmies is a couple of blocks the other side of Notre-Dame at the Convention Centre.

Wow, Cantine L'Orignal looks great and will probably be worth the walk. I had completely forgotten about Timmies. Thank you for both suggestions.

I'm back to report on a breakfast place! Friends we were cruising with arrived the morning before we did and located what became our go-to place for breakfast for the three days we were in Montreal -- Tutti Frutti -- one block west and on the same side of the street as the Notre Dame Basilica in Old Town (at 56 Notre Dame Ouest). They serve only breakfast and lunch. The breakfast menu is extensive, the servings huge, all accompanied by mounds of fresh fruit. Don't miss the fresh-squeezed fruit juices.

BTW, we're going back there next year!

Hi to future visitors to my city. Should you need any information or recommandations, please just ask.

We are currently booked on Zuiderdam repo to Fort Lauderdale dep Quebec on 7th October 2016. It looks like we will fly to Montreal for a few days and then take the train to Quebec.

We are thinking of flying into Montreal on Saturday evening and then taking the 1pm train on Tueday. This would give us 2 full days in Montreal.

DW is not great with walking so any help you can give on seeing the sights would be appreciated.

With pleasure. I would suggest considering these hotels as they are very close to the train station for your ride from Montreal to Quebec city. Fairmount Queen Elizabeth ( just an escalator down to train station), Sheraton on Rene-Lévesque, Marriott Champlain and hotel Bonaventure. In addition, it is a very easy walking distance to the departure of Hop-on Hop-Off city tour. From bus tour you can get off to visit sights that you wish to explore more or stay on the bus for a overview of the city. Short subway ride to old town. Lots of restaurants and shops in this downtown area. If you need more détails, let me know. We were in Cork last summer and enjoy your city.

Merci Oceandream.

the Fairmount QE is closing in June for 12 months, so I have to rule it out, but the others look interesting. They are also close to the underground shopping so DW is excited by that. Plenty of browsing time over the Christmas and New Year holiday to make decisions!

How could I get to Circuit Giles Villeneuve? is it accessible by public transport?

Glad that you enjoyed Cork!

Hi,

Sorry I forgot about the renovations at Queen Elizabeth hotel in the spring of 2016. To get to Gilles Villeneuve' Grand Prix, you can go by subway, get off at Ile Notre-Dame subway station, ( yellow line) and since you would be close, I would suggest to visit our casino on the same island. I know very well the underground city and all the shops, close to the hotels that I suggested to you. Any questions on shops or else, just ask. We cruise also on the Zuiderdam, great ship!. Think about it and let me know.

Before I ask my question, I would like to thank all of the wonderful people who live (or lived) in Montreal answering our questions.

My wife and I are not cruising, but rather visiting Montreal 15-18 Jan. Being the genius that I am, I decided to surprise my very warm-weather loving wife with a long weekend in Montreal in the middle of the winter. Since I am originally from Massachusetts, the "cold" never really enters into my decision-making. That said, she is preparing to layer-up and we are looking forward to our first visit.

We both love good food, beer and whiskey. I have seen some great food recommendations. Do you all have equally good recommendations for craft beer bars and/or whiskey bars? I did see that Unibroue brewery is in Chambly, but i don't see that they do tours.

Also, it looks like there is a winter festival in Parc Jean-Drapeau. Is that geared mainly towards families or will there be more active things for adults as well? I am not anti-kid (I have two myself), I am more looking to see if it is exclusively "kiddie rides" or a mix.

Other than that, it you have any recommendations near the Loews Hotel, I'd love to hear them.

And yes, I do realize I am posting for help and my picture is a spoked B, but you know it's 24-6 in Cups, 26-8 in Playoff series....and then 1 Jan. So really, you should take pity on me!

Thanks!

There are many brewpubs and bars with a wide variety of beers on tap in Montreal, and craft beer can be found in every neighbourhood corner store if you want to grab a six-pack for the hotel room or take some beers back home with you.

Personally I'd rather hit up a bar with a wide variety of beers from different local breweries which allows maximum tastings for minimal effort - and given what walking around Montreal in January is like, I'm sure your wife at least would be inclined to minimise time in the outdoors!

So try plunking yourself down in:

le Saint-Bock (brew their own, but also offer many beers from other folks - so it's the best of both worlds);

Pub St Alexandre (not the widest selection of draft beers, but outstanding Belgian bottled selection and 50+ single malts so should address the whisky side of the equation too if you like Scotch)

Vice et Versa specialise in Cask Ales which are still much harder to find even these days anywhere outside the UK; they also have many regular draft crafts from local breweries, up to about 35 in total.

There are tons of worthwhile brewpubs that only stock their own stuff too, with many opening in the last few years that unfortunately since I only get to Montreal every second year these days I don't feel confident recommending who's doing what best at the moment. Next trip is May for me, too late to help you for next week - hopefully some local drinkers will weigh in too.

Hey Martincath, those recommendations are perfect! I'm with you on plunking myself down in a few places and having fun, but I figured that I should at least pretend that I'm more active.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Since you are looking for beer, fun and good food. I would suggest that you go to these two pubs: 'Les trois Brasseurs' nearest to Loews hotel is located at 1356 Ste-Catherine W and go to : 'La cage aux sports' at 1437 René-Lévesque O or 1212 Ave des Canadiens, just besides where Montréal Canadians play hockey. ( Centre Bell). Both pubs- are also located in Old town at 105 St-Paul W for the first recommandation and 1114 St-Paul E. You can drink different beers and eat good at inexpensive price with your US$$. ..and have fun. For winter activities at Jean-Drapeau is mainly for families, so you will be better you do something else. I would suggest instead that you go shopping in our underground city or try our Inside skating ring at The atrium located at 1000 LaGauchetière. For Whiskey bar, just enjoy the bar at your hotel. Enjoy your visit to Montreal.

Thank you martincath and oceandream! We couldn't do everything in 3 days, but your recommendations (and some others from scraping this thread) really helped us find some gems. Unsurprisingly, the beer and food were outstanding. We are now looking for a New England/Canada cruise that ends in Montreal.
