Greatest Alaskan Souvenirs

the Anchorage weekend Market has a lot of gifts that are made in Alaska...including ulu knives and some other beautiful hand made knives. Vendors sell photos...al kinds of stuff. It is open only on Sat and Sun and is across the street from the Hilton. Made in Alaska handcrafts are usually marked with a tag of a silver polar bear that says made in Alaska. They have really good food vendors there too that are quite reasonable. I had the best crepe there outside of France.

Please share your favorite Alaskan souvenir ? I would love to get an idea before I get there. We will also be inland for several days in addition to the cruise ports.

Thanks

This guy is located in Juneau

I brought back Ulu knives, kids books on Alaska (some autographed) and Glacier silt soaps. I even found a key ring Ulu on the ship that was perfect for a neighbor I knew had a Ulu already. We got great prices on lots of stuff because we were the last ship of the season. We did learn the hard way that you are supposed to clear customs for anything you take onto the ship before you mail it back USPS. So, find the post office, then shop and mail before going back on the ship. That may not be the case for all lines, but if the ship is registered anywhere but USA, it is technically a foreign country and anything leaving the ship must clear customs.

My favorite gift to myself from Alaska is a big carved moose antler! It's sitting on my dresser. Been to Alaska five times now and planning my sixth trip. My bedroom is my Alaska room for sure. Everything in there came from The Great Land.

Ulu knife and I use mine every day- they will confiscate it on the ship though and give it to you on the last day. Also make sure you pack in your checked baggage or better yet- ship it home with all of your other souvenirs so you dont have to pay the overage on your baggage for the extra weight of everything! LOL

I just discovered the Destination Alaska coupon book. According to their site, we won't be getting these on our cruise, so I downloaded the book and plan to print it out and bring with us.

Does anyone know if there is anywhere else these are available or is printing it out our best bet?

I realize a lot of the trinkets in there are cheap, but when you're on a budget and have others to think of too, some of these might make interesting little gifts.

Oh no....you may have just caused me to add to our collecting! We already buy a Christmas tree ornament, a cross, and a Starbucks mug (if available). But I love the idea of the wine glass and rehashing the trip over a glass of wine. I love the Starbucks mugs, but coffee is usually in the morning getting ready for work and not the time to rehash a trip!

I love to get Starbucks mugs also! I have one from each Hawaii trip. If possible, I collect the Starbucks gift cards (they have some location specific cards)

Where was this at? Would love to pick up some lovely Native Tinglit art.

Two of the better native craft shops that I have found in Alaska are:

http://www.crazywolfstudio.com/ in Ketchikan

http://mtjuneautradingpost.com/ in Juneau

The Mt. Juneau Trading Post is particularly good with one of the largest inventories that I have seen anywhere.

http://arcticspiritgallery.com/ in Ketchikan is another good shop...but a little more gallery like in nature and pricing.

In addition to the native Indian carved mask I mentioned in a much earlier post, another purchase that I made was a gold nugget pendent for DW. She loves it. It pays to shop around and of course negotiate, they have lots of room to move on this type of item. Like anything you buy in Alaska you are likely going to make your best deal later in the season.

I brought back an Ulu knife, children's books written by Alaskan authors, glacier skit soap, Alaskan coffee (as gifts), ornaments from different cities (it's a tradition of ours), White Pass Railway puzzle for my son, and a Ray Troll shirt.

Lots of pics too!

Thanks for these recommendations. Do you have any for Anchorage? We'll be there for several days and will have more time to look around. We like to buy a piece of art or native crafts when we travel.

See post no. 15 in this thread (first page.) You want to go to the craft shop at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.

Any others you can recommend? I see that the shop doesn't take credit cards. Not sure how we'd pay as we plan on carrying large amounts of cash or traveler's checks or our checkbook.
Stop at a cash machine. I believe there's one (or more) in the hospital, but plenty in banks all over town. Believe me, the quality and value of the goods at the ANMC is worth the trip.
