Just off of the Whisper...

June 28 - July 7. Copenhagen to Copenhagen

This was our first time on the Whisper (usually on the Shadow). We were very impressed with the ship and crew. The cruise of the Norwegian fjords was fantastic! We will do it again! The food in the MDR was consistently excellent - maybe the best we've had!

First timers on the ship had a hard time getting reservations in La Terraza. They never were able to get in. They didn't know they needed to make reservations early on. The dining staff used iPads and a scheduling app to make reservations for special dining areas. It seemed a little slower than hand written reservations. I think there might have been some glitches in the electronic reservations.

The boarding process and disembarkation in Copenhagen was very easy and speedy. Passengers were able to stay in their rooms until 8:30am instead of 8:00 am which made it less crowded throughout the ship and very streamlined. The biggest downside was that 7 days was not long enough!

I highly recommend the Norway cruise. Beautiful scenery and great excursions.

There is a new Silversea cookbook out with the recipes from La Terraza. It costs about $30 and is well worth it. Love that Duck Ragu!

We were told that the proceeds from the cookbook go to the Crew Fund which is a very good idea.

I looked at the recipe for duck ragu and thought that it was way too complicated for me to tackle, so I will just have to console myself with eating it on Silversea!

Timetravelers, thanks for posting! So glad to hear you enjoyed the cruise. We are actually boarding in a week for the same cruise!

Can you tell me what excursions you did and what you thought of them? Also, how was the weather? What were the temperatures and how cold did it really get in the ports and on deck?

In terms of crew, was the Captain Luigi Rutigliano or someone else? I know the hotel director is changing the day we arrive, and the cruise director is a new fellow named Chris Martin who was with Disney and Regent. Most importantly, do you recall how the bartenders were at the pool bar? : )

Any comments, suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated! We are very excited about this trip. Thanks in advance! :D

The La Terrazza reservation availability seems to vary a great deal. On our recent Cloud cruise, we ate dinner there four times in seventeen days and could have done so more often if we wished. We booked same day a couple of times with no problem. The ship was reasonably full, about 250 passengers.

Herman, I don't know about Whisper officers, but you mentioned Capt. Rutigliano. He is replacing Capt. Sangiacomo on the Cloud.

Wellseasoned and Emtbsam,

Thank you--Sounds like musical deck chairs! I will let you know who we have on board. Captain Corsaro or Pontillo perhaps?

It will also be interesting to see who we have on the Cloud at the end of August. I suspect DuctTape may find out in advance....

Thanks,

HTC

Herman the Cat.. We only did two excursions. One was the Overland to Gudvanger. We were on two trains and then a bus. We thought it was a great day. We weren't impressed with the White Cliffs but it was a stop on the way back to the ship. We also did the Geiranger Panorama which was excellent. Have your cameras ready!!!

People who did the trip from Hellsylt to Geiranger loved their trip as did the people who kayaked at all locations.

We did our own thing in Kristiansund and Bergen. Make sure you are up on deck when coming in to Kristiansund. It is a beautiful port city and numerous islands. Ferry shuttles are available between the major islands.

The only rain we had on the cruise was in Bergen....maybe at night also. Remember there is about 18£ hours I'd daylight in Norway. We had several days of sunshine. The temp during the day was in the 50's and 60's. I think I had a fleece jacket on when I was on the deck.

Bartender on pool deck is Jun ( great guy). Rex is in the Grappa Bar off the casino. This bar is the best kept secret! Carlito was in the main bar.

We loved this cruise and will do it again. The fjords are fabulous!

is on the explorer, and he was one of the many crew members who did the polar plunge!

Thanks, Spinnaker2. He did say he was scheduled for the Explorer because he wanted to try something different but was thinking about seeing if he could transfer to the Whisper. He is one of our favorites but we will be VERY happy to see Rex next week as he is a favorite as well!

Why am I not surprised he did the polar plunge?!? That must have been a fun activity...did you try it?

:D

An observation on the increasingly-mentioned complaint that passengers can't get reservations for La Terrazza, especially if they don't know to take care of it on their first day (and even that doesn't always help):

In the "old days," when most cruises were 10, 12 days or more, tables were always available - often on short notice - because dinners for 300-400 passengers were spread across a greater number of days. Plenty of room for everyone.

Now, with the great number of the popular 7-9 day cruises, there are fewer nights, and 300-500 passengers have to vie for a more limited inventory of tables. And if you happen to be on the 2nd segment of a longer cruise, you might board only to find that the folks already the ship got to the reservation desk ahead of you. In short, supply for La Terrazza is down and demand is way up.
