Best and worst Meet & Greet?

Recommended Posts

The organizer should let the roll call decide if they want name tags, time of event, invitations to ship's officers, or how formal or informal the meet and greet should be. Someone will always be upset no matter which way you go, and that person, no doubt, will have not voiced an opinion ahead of time on the roll call. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished. There is no one right way to do it and much depends on the itinerary, length of the cruise, composition of the group, goals of the group, such as discussion of private excursions, meeeting places, slot pulls, cabin crawls, etc.

Agreed, majority rules because you cannot make everyone happy. along with that, I do not feel one person who considers themselves the leader of the rollcall should make the decidng decision on everything either.

If they do not care to be involved in a gift exchange, cabin crawl, slot pull etc.-someone else on rollcall can take care of that if enough others do want those.

Certain lines, NCL, set the time and venue . . . Then some of the officers attend and light refreshments are provided. I don't think it's a good idea to try to change in those cases. As an organizer, I always like suggesters who also volunteer to coordinate the activity they want to have.

NCL does let the group select their time and place. She suggested I change it, but in the end agreed to let me have the time and place I wanted, with the understanding crew might not be available.

My understanding of a slot pull is that a group of people pool their money together, say $10 each. They go to a $1 slot machine and put the entire amount into the machine. Then each person has 10 pulls of the machine. When everyone has had their turn, they cash out and split any money left in the machine.

Hopefully they hit a few winners and end up with more than they started with. If nothing else, everyone has a good time cheering on with each pull. Sometime the person organizing the slot pull, contacts the casino ahead of time and they will have an area setup for them to play.

The meet and great I last attended was going to have a slot pull but the guy organizing it didn't show up so it didn't happen. At least we had not already given him our money.

Hope this helps.

Don

You are correct. The only thing I would add is that if you are on a line where you use your cruise card for the slot machine it becomes a bit more complicated. Sometimes the organizer uses their card and and then cashes out and pays the others. Maybe the casino would let you do it another way.

If you're dealing with NCL sooner is better as the venues get booked up quickly.

I do think there should be name tags available if one doesn't wish to use on so be it. I like it when the CC screen name is on the tag along with the real name. I've been to meet and greets where the organizer pre-printed the name tags.

True. And the possibility of officers not being available is why I prefer sticking with the time that's best for the ship. It's usually 11ish on a sea day . . . seems to me like as good a time as any. It's always worked fine on our cruises. ymmv

Hi, All! I am organizing a Meet & Greet for our upcoming cruise. I want to get people to mingle more. What are some of the best things you all have done at a Meet & Greet? What are some you would avoid like the plague?

Name tags are very important. Other than that, the only reasons I attend are to -

Exchange ideas on what to see at the ports we visit;

Connect with people who are going with me on non-ship tours; or

Connect with people who are going on any private tours that I have organized.

If that was done on any M&G I was part of, I would not come. They would be included in the worse M&Gs ever.

DON

Don, the cabins crawls, slot pulls, etc. are discussed and set up on the roll call but they are NOT a part of the M&G and are done at a totally different time.

Sometimes, a gift exchange may be done by those who wish at a side table. No need participate unless you wish. We never do ... nor do about half of the others.

I've been on many M&G's and never experienced a gift exchange. I'm with you Lulu. I especially hate the ones where someone takes a new gift or someone else's. They go on forever and may be the reason some people on ships of old walked the plank without being urged to do so.

Someone on my last roll call really wanted a group photo, so I contacted the ship's photography department and they sent one of their brilliant artists to take a picture for us as we were leaving the M&G for the slot pull. I believe that they sold several! It was a very nice photo.

Our meet and greet was a lot of fun. It was on The Magic, at the Red Frog Pub. We have this awesome bartender named Evanston.

The night before the cruise we also had a fun get together at a seafood restaurant. That was also a lot of fun (for us) because a few people brought their kids (not too many, was not unpleasant) and our kids got to meet each other before the cruise. Then the official m&g was for adults only. Really enjoyed meeting everyone and we still keep in touch 7 mos later!

I've been on boards where they do the night before dinner but have never been able to go. Sounds like fun though and then you get on board already knowing people.
