Pros/Cons of cabin on deck 2/3?

We always stayed in a balcony on deck 7 or 9 until my last cruise when I went for an OV #2470 on the Glory. I am claustrophobic so was a little worried about not being able to "escape". Those of you that suffer from this know exactly what I'm talking about.

It was WONDERFUL!!!!! It has 2 windows and very spacious. The noise that some complain about from the engines didn't bother us. Slept great. Plus, it was nice to walk right up one flight of stairs to be at the MDR while everyone else was trying to go down. No crowds. Same thing after dinner - we walked down while people were fighting to go up.

We would walk up 3 flights to get to the Casino/bar/shops. Then if we wanted to go up on Lido, we could take an elevator. We did so much walking but it was great.

In fact we loved it so much that I have the same exact room booked for this Oct on the Glory again and on the Conquest in Jan. I can't justify ever spending that much more for a regular sized balcony room when I can get the huge, convenient 2470 or it's sister 2473 ever again. I really never thought I could "downgrade" to an OV from balcony. Now, I won't go back!

Optimally-placed cabins on Deck 6, right along the axis of the keel

amidships (from back to front)

and halfway up the height of the ship from keel to masthead.

Hard to beat this placement.

Stayed midship deck one on the magic and learned that there is a crew "lounge" on deck zero. It was super noisy and tough to sleep...until about 3am, morning after morning. Found out that we weren't the first or only ones to experience that. I usually enjoy a lower deck inside cabin but for upcoming cruise chose an upper deck.

Our 1st cruise we were on the lowest deck near the bow. It was an Alaska cruise we Hit a storm and most of the day we feet that we were in a Sub for all we saw was water outside the porthole with a small break of sunlight when the bow rode up. The Next day we were about eyeball to eyeball with a pod of Killer whales. They were riding the bow wave.Had close to an hour watching them.

Watch out when you dock mainly if the Dock is on your side of the Ship. You might be level with the dock and if the curtain is open anyone can see into the cabin and also get an eye full.

Also check to where the tide is when you arrive You might be high over the dock and when you return the tide might be out

. And that you are getting clean up for dinner. And putting on a peep hole show to those that are on the dock:rolleyes:

KNEW there was a reason for my avoiding Deck One Riviera!

I'll do Deck 2 willingly, but now I have real reason to decline any Deck 1 offers.

Might I ask what Cabin number you had

to get a better idea of exactly what part of the ship the crew lounge area is...?

We always took a balcony until a couple of cruises ago. My M-I-L wanted to stay on deck 2. We chose a cabin under guest services.

We loved it! The cabin felt much bigger and it was so quiet! We never missed having the balcony - we would walk up to deck 3 and sit outside there. Close to the water and so peaceful! There are chairs provided.

I've looked and looked and can't find our cabin number. But...it was an inside cabin, midship. Several "neighbors" heard the noise and also complained. When I spoke to guest services, they sent security three nights in a row, or so they said. Eventually we were given a small on board credit to our account for our inconvenience. If you do a search you'll find this noise from a crew lounge has been reported by other people. Hope you enjoy your cruise!

3 cruises now all deck 6 or 7. Ive often wondered about the lower decks but in the end I think id miss the balcony (which I do use). But I could probably cruise more often if I sucked it up and took an inside cabin lol!

Probably still couldn't cruise more since we live so far from any ports and airfare is ridiculous, but DH wouldn't give up,his balcony. But he loves to go out there and watch for flying fish, dolphins, and SMOKe...I know...yuck!

We have 2470 on our upcoming Splendor cruise. My DH is still worried about missing the balcony after 5 cruises with one...I am anxious to try the OV and was happy to read your comment! Thanks! You made my day!

Lowest price is always where we go, but we also prefer Riviera deck. We mostly cruise for Ports, so getting on and off is easy. We also avoid the Pool area/Lido deck as much as possible, too crowded and loud.

Then again, on some ships we are close to a dining room, but we don't do MDR and use the buffet....so....no matter what, climbing stairs is going to happen.

But yes, quiet is nice and less motion, as we tend to like mid-ship low deck.

Depending on the ship a room mid ship on deck 2 or 3 could be the best room. Some ships have all things happening on 4,5 or 6. With the exception of making it to the Lido deck, you'd be well centered. I've stated on those levels many times and found it pretty handy!

Happy cruising!
