Manhattan Port Parking

This will be my first time cruising out of NYC. Are there any alternatives to the Manhattan port parking? I have done a bit of research on this and I am not coming up with too many alternatives. I was curious if someone here has some inside scoop that maybe I have not found? From what I have read it seems the convenience of parking at the port seems worth it, but I'm not 100% sure about this.

TIA.

The cost of parking at the pier is considerably less than most places in Manhattan. Although there are coupons and such available for some other garages, then you have the cost and hassle of getting from those to the pier. For my $$, it's much better not to have so schlep your bags in and out of cabs or trains, etc. Pull up, drop bags, park, ride elevator down - voila! ;)

We sailed from Manhattan last year and decided to park at the port. We have a Jaguar so we needed a safe secure place. We could actually see our car on the dock from our stateroom! It was hassle free, safe and secure and worth every penny. Especially when we returned tired and our car was right there when we disembarked.

I kind of figured it was most convenient and well worth every penny! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I researched several different options, but none seemed as convenient as the port itself, especially when returning home. How easy/difficult is it to get to the port in Manhattan? That is my next worry, navigating NYC!

What we did instead of sleeping overnight in Manhattan we booked a room at the Foxwoods MGM GRand Casino in Connecticut. It was really inexpensive, the food was great, the room fantastic. It's only about 1.5 - 2 hour drive into Manhattan. You have until 4pm to board. We left the Foxwoods about 10am and arrived in Manhattan around noon. We could not have made a better choice. And we had fun at the casino! Go to Foxwoods MGM Grand Connecticut website. I really recommend it. It was a fun precurser to the cruise.

It is very easy! And if you get turned around, you will find your way. The pier is on the West Side, so you are barely driving in Manhattan. I don't know what scares people - you can only drive so fast with the traffic and lights.

It's easy to get to the pier. If you coming from the north, east, or west, you have to get yourself to the west side of Manhattan and take the West Side Highway (NY 9A) south, and the pier is right where the expressway ends.

If you are coming from the south, your directional software (Mapquest, Google, GPS) will probably tell you to come through the Lincoln Tunnel and go north a few blocks. If you have a fear of driving through local streets, it might be worth your while to drive a few miles farther north to the George Washington Bridge (at the end of the NJ Turnpike), and then come south on the West Side Highway as above. It might take a few more minutes (and some extra in tolls), but your peace of mind is worth something. I grew up just outside of NYC so I have no problems driving through Manhattan, but when I drove up and had a second car following me it was much easier using the GW Bridge so I didn't risk losing the second car in traffic. Just remember to stay in the very right lanes of the bridge going into Manhattan so you can take the exit for the West Side Highway.

I also looked into alternate parking sources, and it is much easier to park right at the pier. Bite the bullet and enjoy your cruise!

Just to be sure an inexperienced cruiser isn't misled and ends up missing their cruise, you don't have until 4pm to board. For NCL cruises you have to be at the pier at least one hour prior to departure provided you've completed online registration and have your edocs, or two hours prior to departure if you've haven't completed the online registration. This means for a ship departing at 4pm you have to be there by 3 or 2, respectively. For a ship departing at 3 (and some do), you must be there by 2 or 1, respectively.

By the way, some other cruise lines use even a longer timeline than NCL and insist that you be at the pier a minimum of 90 minutes to 2 hours prior to scheduled sailing.

We were just on the 11/3 Breakaway sailing. We elected to park at Port Imperial in Weehaukin NJ and take the NY Waterways ferry across. It's $14/day to park there vs $36/day at the port, and it was only a short walk to the ship. Couldn't have been easier.

Plus $9 per adult in each direction for the ferry fare, and if you're incapable of walking the half mile with your luggage or if the weather is bad you're going to end up paying for a taxi too. Still a lot cheaper than parking at the pier, but not quite as cheap as simply the difference between the $14 and $35 per day parking charges.

Nikki, a reminder our ship sails at 3 ! I'm sure you know this but figured I would just send you a reminder. :) Looking forward to meeting you.

Where is home for you? We live in upstate NY and it is so easy and so cheap to take the train to Penn Station and then a cab to the pier. i'll never drive again to NYC. Plus I think what they charge for parking there is ridiculous. JMO :)

We are a party of 7. We'll be in NJ the night before we set sail. We are staying with friends in Harrington Park, NJ. My friend said she is 40 min from the pier. I feel $35 a day is ridiculous as well, but from what I have heard that is fairly inexpensive for the city.

  • 2 weeks later...

$175 for the week and they bring you to the pier in your own car to drop off you and your luggage, then they take your car back to the garage.

So..... do you recommend ParkRight?? $25 vs. $35 for 7-8 days depending on how they charge for the duration sounds like something to consider - they drive you in your car to the port but you take a cab back on the return - is it really $3 for the quick return cab ride as they post - I thought NY cabs had a minimum much higher than that??

More details from your personal experience would be appreciated if you have a moment :)

Taxis in NY City are inexpensive compared to many other cities, so while it won't be $3, it also won't cost a lot more.

Taxi fare (depending on traffic) will probably be about $5 plus tip. When you enter the cab the meter will register $2.50 plus $.50 tax and then it's $.50 per 1/5th mile (or minute if the taxi is moving less than 6 miles per hour).

FWIW, we park at the cruise terminal for the sake of convenience and security. It's self-park and lock and the parking lots are on the roofs of the cruise piers and only open on days when cruises are embarking/disembarking. I guess as a NY native $35 a day for parking in Manhattan sounds cheap enough to me. ;)

We just returned home today, and our experience with ParkRight was great. The cab ride not including tip was about five dollars, and they reimburse you for that. It is only a few blocks from the port, so if you have good weather and not a ton of luggage, you could probably walk it if you wanted to. The employees we encountered on arrival and departure were friendly and efficient. We will definitely park there again.
