Dive-In Movie Fail

Some of the things I have noticed on Carnival ships were down right revolting . Especially during the hairless chest contest .:(

Apparently not enough to keep you from watching it. I'm just saying! This is just too funny. I was under the impression vacation was for "getting away", and relaxing. Other than chair hogs and the people running to be first in the Buffett line. Nothing but good times for me. By the way , anyone ever heard of the Buffett running out of food?

So am I wrong to think this is false advertising??

http://www.carnival.com/onboard/cruise-entertainment/dive-in-movies.aspx

I looked at your link and nowhere in there does it say that they guarantee a family friendly movie. I can see them basing that decision upon the number of children onboard and since you were sailing at a time when most kids are in school I wouldn't think there would be a ton of kids onboard. What did they say when you asked about blankets? Was there popcorn?

So you need a movie in order to be happy on a cruise. Got it.

Good news! You can watch a movie in your cabin! Just check the schedule for a child appropriate film in case they don't have one on deck that suits your fancy.

I don't need any movies personally (although they were fun in the background). But the OP shouldn't be told that CCL shouldnt have to plan for family friendly movies on deck because its too hard to choose activities that appeal to everyone's tastes.

Good idea! Maybe you should take them 'elsewhere' in the bigger sense... :D

To the poster who said they can't afford, Disney:

I paid the same on DCL (3 day FABULOUS balcony room and complete WOW cruise and private island, 4 day interior coming up with private island) as I did on CCL (spa interior and no private island).

Outside of the fares, I use a rewards visa card and have already gotten a whopping $320 in reward perks and on board credit and have another $200 gift card coming to add to it, which puts me at $520 savings, and that doesn't even count for any reward dollars I accrue between now and May! One dollar counts for one dollar on Disney (tix, cruise, online whatever) (not sure how CCL's does it, but i think its based on points system or something.) Point being, if you are smart, you can save cruising disney.

AND you don't have to be squeashmish and say "let's hurry along kids" when the old man in the hairy chest contest starts doing a nasty dance to get the ladies to vote for him... or like us, squirm uncomfortably when the dancer on the stage show rides the bull... etc etc...

I cruise mainly in the summer and there's always a great mix of concerts, sporting events, kid movies, and more "adult themed" movies. And they are all very well attended. One of my greatest experiences was skipping dinner and watching the Opening Ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Olympics on the Lido. It was great!

Furthest thing from a cheerleader, but I'm inclined to believe them when they say they adjust the showings to go along with the demographics on board. It makes no sense to show a cartoon when there are 20-50 kids on board vs thousands of adults.

The OP's post is somewhat reflective of the times we currently live in. Far too many parents let their children watch television or play video games instead of participating with them in some sort of activity, be it an outdoor activity or sitting at the table to play a board game. The television, video games, and the movie screen have become an electronic babysitter. Okay, so what if there isn't a kid/ family friendly movie playing at the dive-in theater? There are plenty of other things that you and your children could do together. Go play a board game, create a scavenger hunt, read to your children, whatever. Use your imagination, same as you would do (or should be doing) at home, or a land-based vacation. Where is written that the cruise line has to provide 24 hour entertainment for the children on board, thus relieving the parents from having to keep their children occupied and happy? Quite honestly, if the cruise lines did away with the dive-in movies altogether, I don't think very many people would miss it.

I wasn't being sarcastic?? I was being serious. Like, to another more family based vacation. Sorry if that didn't come through?! I applaud you for being selective for your family... I'm not sure why you think I was being sarcastic?

Oh I see, actually Carnival advertises as a family cruise line .

Perhaps Carnival should abide by what they're advertising and clean up their act.

I think a lot of people don't realize that "family friendly" doesn't equal "focused on children." Carnival has programs for kids and, during times when there are lots of kids on board, has plenty of kid-oriented programming for the Dive-In Movies. Therefore, they are absolutely "family friendly." Heck, for my March cruise on the Breeze, I had to avoid the entire Lido area because they were playing a crappy Justin Bieber concert. The bottom line is that if you want to see more kid-oriented stuff, either pony up the money to cruise with a line like Disney (which is absolutely focused towards kids), cruise when more kids are out of school and on vacation, or actually entertain your kids yourself.

On my last 8 night Breeze cruise they played the lineup below at the Dive-In Movies. I actually thought they played more "family friendly" movies than I would have liked! Our of the specific themed nights & movies below, I'd say they split it down the middle with half "family friendly" and half more geared towards adult. And this was on a cruise last January where there were very few kids onboard.

Day 1 – Oscar Night

8:00 Apollo 13

10:30 Million Dollar Baby

Day 2 – Date Night

10:00 I Don’t Know How She Does it

11:30 P.S. I Love You

Day 3 – Family Night

5:00 The Pirates Band of Misfits

6:30 The Lorax

Day 4 – Musical Night

8:30 Chicago

10:30 Grease

Day 5 – Super Hero Night

8:30 Captain America

10:45 Iron Man 2

Day 6 – Comedy Night

5:15 The Muppets

7:00 Mirror Mirror

Day 7 – James Bond Night

8:30 Quantum of Solace

10:30 Casino Royale

Day 8 – Action Night

8:30 The Wrath of the Titans

10:30 Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Check your expectations at home. I had heard new blankets, new popcorn...and I was looking forward to another "magical" night with my kid watching a cartoon and creating those memories you see on their commercials. We just returned from an EIGHT night cruise, you would think they could have gotten it right at least one night right? No.....

There was no kids movie....ever. We went and asked 2x if there would be and were told we would just have to keep watching the schedule. At the end we were told...sorry there weren't enough kids on your sailing. My reply to him was....right now they are playing a football game and there are three people watching it.

What is so hard about a classic family friendly movie great for all ages??

I would watch a classic kids movie! and I don't even sail with my kids!

Best post in this thread. Taking a trip in the middle of the fall almost guarantees a trip with a more adult focus because most kids are in school not on vacation.

There were 97 kids on board, it was an 8 night repositioning cruise. My 10yo son was on his 15th cruise with Carnival. We enjoyed other activities, this was just one that we weren't able to enjoy this time. We didn't buy a blanket because why would we, when we didn't get the memory to go with it. They had popcorn also, not the point.

The picture in the ad shows a mom with her 2 kids, implying a family friendly movie.

So, its bad parenting to want to watch a movie on deck with your kid. My daughter (8) and I did that last year and I thought the time was very special. I loved looking at her lay on the lounger, eating her popcorn, and laughing. We had already ate dinner and played the game "battleship" that day. (also the ropes course on the Magic) So why should we not want to watch a movie together?

Thanks for this! It's pretty well rounded actually. I would say that Muppets DEFINITELY counts as family friendly! (While M.I., Wrath of Titans, Any Bond Movies, and sadly both of those musicals, would not.)

Also, that 'middle ground' post was a very good post. Especially because they recommended Disney, again! (we've had a few of those this thread.)

(haha :DI have a 'problem', I know it! Recognition is the first step, they say.)

OK so the OP didn't like the movie choices. Not good ones for kids I admit. But I suppose if you want to ensure there will be a movie for kids everytime the screen is on, you should sail Disney. Once or twice during the week they could have put on a kid's movie I suppose. But then someone would have complained about that. And just because Carnival doesn't show kid-oriented movies all of the time does not mean they aren't family friendly. Since when do the movie choices define that? There's plenty to do for kids on Carnival. Besides, family oriented means there's something for EVERYONE to enjoy.

Glad to hear the rest of your cruise was good OP.
