Frustrating Operating Procedure- final charges

Recommended Posts

Most of us who travel frequently don't even stop at the hotel desk on the way out. I think that's part of the OP's point.

My point was that it's not a hotel and 3000+ guests aren't leaving at the same time. I agree it would be very frustrating. After 23 cruises without a buzz, I'm waiting for my turn. As far as leaving hotels, we always stop to make sure there are no other charges. We don't want any surprises.

I'm not saying that they should be able to process 3,000 plus bills without having a single problem. I just think that when they do, there could most certainly be a better way of handling it.

Interesting that you've been on that many sailing without a problem. I've had it happen twice in my past four sailings (different lines). I wonder if it's more likely with higher charges. I pull money off my account for the casino. Even if I win or break even, I keep the cash and let the charges run through my bill (I'm a sucker for points!:o). So I tend to have a sizeable account balance at debarkation. I wonder if there is a correlation between the amount of the charges and the likelihood of encountering a problem.

Is it possible (I am FAR from an experienced cruiser) that the charges aren't applied to your credit card until the ship docks (or is at least close enough to use some other transmission method than satellite)? So while they told you the night before all your charges would go on your AmEx, that was true, but they hadn't been APPLIED to your AmEx yet. Does that make sense?

This differs from a land based hotel because the hotel can actually run the charge to the credit card at any point.

As far as why the same card IS able to be used hours later, I don't have an idea on that one.

My laundry charges were made to my card each day regardless of whether we were at sea or not. AMEX sends me a text of each charge as it occurs.
