Hey

Was wondering if anyone else has had a problem with NCL sending you refunds on cash deposits that were made to an onboard account for a cruise. Per a rep I spoke to yesterday it can take 30 days for thw refund, but I don't see this liated in writing on their website or on any of my cruise documents.

I thought people settled their cash accounts the final night (or early last morning) of the cruise.

That's what I thought, but when I went down to guest services on the last morning of the cruise I was told that I would receive a check to the address that they have on file. I was told this would take around a week.

It looks like your cruise ended about 10 days ago. I think that is well within the window of time to process a refund check. Most report between 10 and 20 days. If you don't hear anything in the next week or so, I would call Miami for a followup.

The timeline seems about right.

Word of advice to other cruisers.

By far the easiest way to deal with onboard account is a credit card.

If you prefer to pay in cash and have a credit card, try this: Give them a CC for your account, and put down some cash, but less than you think you will need. Then, on or near the last day, pay down the balance with cash. If you still have $10-$20 in charges, they will just put it on the CC.

Also, as regulars will share with you, there are often bad stories about DEBIT cards and holds by your bank. Avoid those.

If you do not have a credit card... sorry.

Hi,

I do have a credit card, but chose the cash deposit option instead. I will try your suggestion next time.

Thanks

In the future if you don't want to use a credit card and choose to do a cash deposit, you could also have them cash the check for you at guest services instead of having it mailed.

The OP tried that and was told the check would be mailed to them

Unless I read it wrong, it did not indicate that the OP tried to cash the check onboard. If I overlooked that, I apologize to the OP. Additionally, I am responding from personal experience. I have a credit card, but I use cash deposits because I usually receive onboard credit as gifts so I put the minimum required (in cash) until the onboard credit kicks in either that evening or the next day. I have done this on the last 3 cruises.

What check are you referring to? Unless I"m reading it wrong, the OP made their deposit in cash, didn't use all of it, and NCL will issue a check sometime in the next couple of weeks. Here's what the OP said:

Did you actually get a refund check on the ship and then promptly cash it? This appears to be different.

There was no check to cash. It was to be mailed at a later date, probably from the corporate office. If they had a check, he could just take it home with home.

When I went to inquire about my refund from my cash deposit same as the OP did, I was told that it would be mailed to me. I asked if it could be cashed out, I was told yes. I signed an authorization form stating I endorsed the check over and the money was given to me.

Dear OP, I do hope that you receive your funds soon.

Thanks for the clarification. Your statements were confusing to me because there wasn't actually a check in their case or yours.

I had purchased OBC left over too. I was told the check would be mailed to the home address on record. I was leaving for Maui the following week and wanted the cash to take with me. I went to the casino and paid 3% fee to receive cash from my on-board account.

Another little tip, they used my purchased OBC first, so that my $100 OBC from NCL was still in the account too. I would have lost that, but stopped on my way back to the cabin and purchased a Guess watch.

My final bill showed something like 23 cents credit, but I never received a check.

As others have posted, NCL supposedly has a policy, but it isn't always followed, sounds to me like whoever is working the desk does what they want to do.

If you do have a credit card always use it for things like this. You can pay it off before your are charged any interest. That is how we do it, plus we get extra points which adds up to cash whenever you decide to use it. By using your CC you have a record of what you did, you do not have to worry about mix ups and it is just a safer way to do business. As for how long it takes, yes, it does take awhile and should it? Nope.

We love getting points on some cards, and cash back on others. I know some folks have reasons for not using cards, but we are happy we have them.

Not exactly the same thing, but we had on board credits left at the end of our cruise and a negative balance on our account the last day. We were told a check would be mailed in a few weeks and it was received in that timeframe.

It was the first time we had Norwegian owe us money at the end of a cruise. :p

I wasn't given that option when I went to guest services on the last morning of the cruise. Thanks I and I hope to get the funds soon also;)

Update:

Called guest services and last Friday (04/25/14) and was told that they had my incorrect address in the system (even though it's listed correctly on cruise documents). Verfied address and was told by rep that information would be sent to finance department for updating. Called to (05/01/14) and this information was never sent to finance department, my address still hasn't been updated and no check has been sent out. I'm past being annoyed about this:( Happy Thursday everyone;)

OP - That would be very frustrating to me...I hope you get your money soon. Please keep us updated.

I wasn't aware that they did it this way. In 2012 on the Epic I did a cash deposit on day one ($2100). I was told I wouldn't be able to access the unused balance until the last day of the cruise. I settled up at guest services on the final morning, and I received cash for the remaining balance (around $700) - it was painless. I wonder why they are doing check refunds now....that is weird and I just don't like it.

This is what it says on NCL.com (in the "money matters" section of the FAQ).

Cash/Traveler's Checks Procedures

You can deposit cash or US Traveler's Checks into your onboard account.

A cash deposit may be placed on your account in the following amounts:

7 day cruises - $300/person

Less than 7 days - $150/person

More than 7 days - $450/person

Once you have exceeded the deposited amount, your account will be closed to further charges. You can deposit as much money as often as you'd like throughout the cruise, however, refunds cannot be made until the day of disembarkation for any excess. US Traveler's Checks can be cashed onboard and are the same as cash.

**Personal checks will not be accepted, nor can they be cashed onboard.

It says that you get refunded the day of disembarkation....a check a few weeks later is NOT the same thing....I wouldn't be very happy....I'm glad I'm doing the credit card thing this time

Guess I must have been lucky - I went to guest services on the last morning of a western med cruise as we hadn't received our final onboard spent invoice and they told me it was because I was in credit (I had cancelled an excursion and unexpectedly they refunded it) I was then given the cash that I was owed there and then without me having to ask for it.:)
