Will be taking the train from Rome to Civitavecchia . Is the distance to the port check in from the station walkable with luggage and/or are there alternatives. Heard we can get the port shuttle but that is only in the port area. Need to get to the shuttle, any suggestions?

We would emphasize that you will likely have to walk those approximate 5 blocks with your own luggage. Even if you wanted to pay a taxi to take you the short distance from train station to pier, it is likely that there will be no taxis. The taxi situation in Civitavecchia is always hit or miss with many more misses when you only want to go a short distance :).

But the good news is that the walk is flat, and the sidewalks very good.

As others have said, it's best to plan to walk the 5-6 blocks to the port entrance, where free shuttles circulate (they are marked as to which ship they will drop you at).

A good roller bag with sturdy wheels is the key for me, along with a carry-on bag that I can either wear as a backpack or piggyback onto the larger bag.

Anything more than that will be somewhat more of a struggle -- not just on the walk between the train station to the port entrance, but keeping in mind you must also manage to wrangle your own luggage on and off the train. Plus, it's likely that in Civitavecchia you'll also have to go down and up a flight of stairs in the train station.

If you are reasonably fit and your luggage has strong stout wheels yes 5 -6 blocks and level and quite doable. Walk out front of the station building turn right and walk down the ramped roadway till it comes to the ground level.

Then walk along the sidewalk for 5 - 6 blocks straight ahead till you see on your left what looks like an old castle with a rounded corner tower. That is the port entry. Port staff will direct you to your ships shuttle bus which will take you to your ship . At all points where you cross streets on the walk from the station to the port the footpaths are ramped down for luggage on wheels so you do not have to lift your bags at all. PS : Taxis are a flat 15 Euros from the station to the port entry, beware of drivers trying to charge more. Plenty of cafes and open air opportunities on the way to sit down and rest and take in a real Italian quality cappacino or latte .

Best advise yet. thanks. We were not sure of the distance. 5-6 blocks doable especially with inviting cafes along the way. I assume the ship check in is inside the port.

Ship check in will be at the dockside near the ship. You need to catch the shuttle bus that has your ship's name on it, as there will be several, and the port is spread out.

Yes, the ship check in is at the ship itself. Normally in large tents.

The shuttle will have the name of the ship and stops right outside the tent.

Its really easy. It might be a bit hectic around the shuttle pick up/drop off but in all the times we have taken the shuttle it has worked out fine.

Just back from our cruise which started in Civitavecchia. The shuttle stop for the port bus is temporarily located several blocks north of where it was, due to construction in the area. It is now 1 block from Hotel Traghetto, where we stayed. We could see the buses from our balcony so it was an easy walk for us.

We were there a week or so ago. I would not walk from the station to the temporary shuttle pick up point. Its a good 20-30 minute walk and would be a pain with luggage.

There is a local bus outside the station with a sign saying 'railway station' in the window (they dont change the sign from the one way trip from the shuttle drop off to the Railway Station) that runs approx every 20 mins. It costs 1€ however on the return leg from station to shuttle there was no facility to pay and no ticket checks. Its a long yellow bus with multiple entrance doors, not the much smaller local buses. Once at the shuttle area you board the free shuttle to your ship.

I have to say, for one of the worlds busiest cruise ports it is a pretty poor set up, temporary or otherwise and feels like a moneymaker for the local bus service. The shuttles could just have easily been routed to the station.

I did this recently, it's a long but easy walk. The hardest part is if your train comes in on the track that requires going down and up the stairs to get out. If you can manage that without trouble, you can manage the walk.
