Just noticed that the Star Princess will be in drydock from 12/9/2014 through 12/18/2014. Does anyone know where and what they will be doing?

Last December they did the same thing. It is probably just a once a year clean up such as replacing carpets and cleaning upholstery.

A drydock is for work that cannot be performed while a ship is in the water. For example, scraping barnacles, painting the hull, updating ships navigation electronics, etc.

In a short drydock such as this, little inside work will be done other than items you mention in public areas.

Just got off the Star Princess with an 11 day Alaska cruise. The floor they put down on the 5th deck is very uneven. It is a stone looking floor. In the International Cafe/Bar area where you can sit a tables it was destroying the legs of the wooden chairs. You can not slide but rather have to pick the chair up to move it. Doing that forwards and backwards when sitting in the chair is not easy. Are we the only ones that have noticed this?

It's like taking your car in for an oil change and tune-up and getting it detailed at the same time.

Ship's hulls get barnacles and other crustations that attach to the hull and stabilizers and clog up the thrusters. This slows down the ship as it doesn't move as smoothly through the water. These are all scraped off and the hull repainted with a Teflon-like coating. The propellers are checked and polished and the engines given a thorough cleaning and maintenance. This is stuff that can't be done in port or while passengers are onboard and it's not anything passengers notice or care about. But it's important to maintain the ship.

ALL ships have routine dry docks every 2-3 years.

PrincessCruisesFAQ.........

Shows that the Star Princess is being scheduled for a "tuneup and minor freshening" Dec. 10th - 19th, 2014.........further explains, "Minor, freshening" refers to soft element upgrades like carpets, linens, wares as well as painting, polishing, deep cleaning. Ship system maintenance is also performed during these dry dock periods, something akin to a tune-up for a car.

Looks like work will be done in San Francisco at that time.

Otta be nice after the works done!
