Royal moving to Asia

It's not about the USA, it is ALL about money and shareholder satisfaction. That's how it is. Fine, who cares what the name of the cruise line is.

You put ships, whatever they may be, where you think you will do the best with them, and Asia is a huge emerging market (actually, it's already emerged big time). Obviously, you are not putting a a cruise ship at Somalia!

I would not be surprised if one of the forthcoming Genesis class ships (Oasis type) spends most of its time in Asia, and you can be certain one of them will be spending some time in Europe. When you have four of them you can do this. Same with Quantum and Anthem. Maybe they will build two more of them, as they need to have ships that can get into a port!

The reality is that the majority of the US population has yet to take a cruise, but there is a whole world out there and markets where people can now afford to do it and want to. If we are not loading up the ships here at profitable prices, there will be those elsewhere who will. You just can't keep sending the "old" tonnage to other countries either as they might want new ships too!

As to "best" ships, that is subjective. For many, the best means biggest and newest. For me, I miss QE2 and Regal Empress; both of which combined would not even be the HALF the size of Allure!

Some folks want to be on a ship, others want to be on a floating land resort. Some want to know they are on the sea, and others do not. This latter point is why RCI came out with ships like Oasis.

BTW, I would love to go on these behemoths. I recall having dinner with the captain on Celebrity Millennium, and at the time, and despite all its technology, he said it was too big!

So, you suck it up and deal with it, as it is not all about the USA, it is, was and always will be about where to make the most $$$$$$$$$$, and I can assure you that this is what RCI and any cruise line cares most about.

They have to go where the disposable income is, and where there is a possibility of a healthy economy in the future. Real wages are falling in the US, while they are rising in Asia.

Until Cuba opens up for US based cruises, the east-coast market will continue to be relatively saturated. Congress could also repeal the PVSA which would open up US coastal cruises, but that's not likely to happen.

MacDonalds, Ford, WalMart and all other corporations go where the money is. They aren't going to make major strategic decisions on something that happened in the past:rolleyes:

Not the same at all....because here on the west coast I can still eat at McDonald's, buy any ford I want and shop at numerous WalMarts....What I can't do is cruise on an RCI ship from the west coast any longer (but I will again next year on their very limited offerings). I agree with the OP !!

What is this talk about these ships not being available? You can book them just as easily as anyone else can. You just have to fly to get to them. You know, like the rest of the world has had to do for a very long time.

I don't know why people insist on thinking only America deserves the newest, fanciest ships. We have Royal 9 ships (at least!) that sail year round out of the US. China has 2. Europe has none. Australia has none. The fact is, whether you want to accept it or not, Americans are not spending like Asians are right now onboard the ships. You can clearly see this from the published reports.

Plus, now I have an excuse to go see Asia by sea!

Does anyone else feel as though Royal is sending all its best ships to Asia?

I know that where they think the money is right now but the reason they were able to build these newer and better ships is because of all the money they made over here in the United States.

It seems like all the Voyager class will eventually be there. Anthem and Quantum are on the other side of the world(Europe and Asia after Quantum Debuts here). Allure Spends time in Europe. Independence spends time in Europe. Serenade is moving to Asia. and others I cant think of.

Just a bit agravating to see the ships that were essentially built off the business in the US leaving to the other hemisphere while the older ships(nothing wrong with them) stay here

I hope they send quantum and anthem to Asia, also the other two amusement parks of the seas.Love to see a Voyager class or freedom class in cape liberty. But will not pay Quantum prices.:)

RCCL enticed Port Everglades to build the very large and very modern Terminal 18 by guaranteeing a certain amount of passengers passing thru. This means that there will be 2 Oasis class ships going out of FLL for the foreseeable future. There will also probably be a Q Ship operating out of 18 as well as =X= S ships using that big building.

I believe that counting present and future builds where RCCL has exercised options there will be 4 Oasis class and 3 Q ships floating in the oceans by the end of 2018, plenty to cover the US, Asia and Europe. Not to mention the five =X= S class ships.

For a little perspective the Voyager class ships in Asia / Australia are the 2 oldest ships (1st gen Voyager) and the newest one (2nd gen Voyager). The Radiance class that alternates with Alaska is the oldest Radiance class ship. Finally for the Vision class there is the oldest ship (Legend) and a newer one (Rhapsody shared with Alaska) but Rhapsody is heading to Europe leaving only the oldest Vision class.

Yes the Quantum of Solace is coming to Asia but the fleet in the area is not full of the latest ships.

As an aside you should have seen the reaction in Australia to a Voyager class turning up in 2012 when a 13 year old ship was celebrated as amazing and revolutionary.

The Quantum of Solace will NOT be going to Asia, as that is a James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig. ;) :D

A movie which is named after a short story in the book Octopussy in which the UK ambassador to Jamaica tells a story about a woman to James Bond and says that everyone deserves a certain quantum of solace in their lives. Which I suppose could be said about those wanting to cruise on a new ship in Asia.

Come, cruise out of Singapore!! :):)

We are cruising Mariner B2B out of Singapore in March 2015. So excited. Have never been there, but heard of Singapore all my life. Planning on spending a few days there before the cruise. Just got a travel book to read about what to see and do. Think maybe the best advice is to sit and watch for a while. :D

Thanks for the website. I put it into favorites to explore later (think this evening). I am an elementary retired teacher who now tutors in my city public schools. Is there a site that you can think of, easily, that I can take my students to so they can know where I am and what I am doing there? (I plan to search myself this summer, but am hoping you know and shortcut the search). I do this with my kids every year. They like it and so do I. :D

I think the world is becoming a much smaller place and welcome the international options. There are only so many ports in the Carribbean and a whole world out there to explore! I'm excited for it!

I agree. As much as I wanted to try Oasis/Allure, I didn't like paying those prices for those ports. Many ships, for much less, go to the same and better ports. And, I'm sure the other cruise lines are building more innovative ships to compete against. I understand the ship is the thing, but for how much longer can they charge premium prices for the same old ports?

I'm finally going on Oasis; I grabbed it as soon as I saw it was in Europe. I'm also planning on being on Quantum in Asia.

Sorry, I don't really understand your requirements for the website.

Is this website supposed to showcase a certain country or city? Or more like a travel-type of website?

And I thought RCI was a not for profit company

They are in it for profit. They will go where they can make the most profit.

I think that it's exciting to have options to explore the rest of the world on first class ships. I have travelled in Asia on business and think that it is fascinating to explore. Just a word of caution about booking things in Asia. There are billions of people there that do not do things the way they are done in this country. It is a whole different experience when announcements are done in other languages first. It's new to us when English is the third language used. Activities are different on board and etiquite is based on their norm not ours. Maybe, because it's part of the 53 day repo things will still be a bit western in nature but I wouldn't count on it. There are different ways of behavior in gambling too so beware in the casino.

This was never meant to be a debate of business strategy! Or the Company Name.

This was meant as people talking about their feelings towards the best ships not being available.

Not sure why people on these board always feel the need to attack conversation with facts instead of just chatting.

Yes you have to follow money, bottom line, however it sucks to see the best ships in Asia and Europe.

As much as some think it, the US isn't the centre of the world. For many, many years people from other countries have traveled to the US to board cruises. Now some of the ships are going to their part of the world and they no longer have to travel. Maybe if you want to get on one of these ships, it's your turn to travel.

Yes, I believe Anthem is spending Summer 2015 in Southampton, and then goes to Bayonne in October 2015.

Disappointed guess we will not be sailing out of Bayonne in 2015.Would love to see a Voyager class ship there.:)

By any measure, USA is still a great country, a superpower no less. But increasingly, many countries are growing strongly.

We have had to travel long distances to cruise and we see it as part of the experience, whether it is sailing out of Southampton, Rome or Sydney.

I think it will get to the point where we will wish to see a Voyager class ship anywhere in the US.:(
