Grandeur and Arthur

I know some people on the Grandeur roll calls were concerned about Arthur. I just checked Marine Traffic and Grandeur is off the coast of Kill Devil Hills, NC well north of the storm. In fact, according to the weather there, it's calm cloudy but not stormy. They are only doing 8.6 knots because they are well ahead of schedule. DH and I discussed this last night and his feeling is the Captain is getting the ship to the bay ASAP where they won't feel muchimpact as the storm passes VA/MD tonight.

It appears that the ship will not really be impacted at all by this storm since they will get in while it's still moving north and well east of Baltimore and by the time Grandeur leaves Baltimore tomorrow the storm will be way north and the seas behind should be good.

We are first time cruisers heading to the Bahamas later this summer, so I find your post interesting to see how a cruise is affected by a hurricane, if it has any effect at all. I guess the cruise lines have learned all the ins and outs of working in, around and through hurricane season.

The times we've noticed weather having the most impact to a cruise is if the storm hits the port when the ship is supposed to be there. They would rather be out to sea at that point, so they are more likely to change schedule. Of course, if the storm damages the port like it did to Galveston a few years ago, that affects many cruises.

Fortunately, Baltimore is well inland and well protected from this storm. The Chesapeake Bay is where at least one ship (Pride or Enchantment-I can't remember which) rode out Sandy. Better to be in the bay than tied up at port where more damage can happen to both ship and pier. I know for Sandy, they turned the ship into the storm which protects ship and those onboard, and rode it out, although I think they didn't have passengers at the time.

What's happening with Grandeur now is actually the best case scenario for both those debarking and those embarking, missing the worst of the seas. Today might be a little bumpy but nothing like it would be if they were coming in later.

They usually try to avoid "Crossing the T" as in crossing on the north side of the storm, but in this case, the storm is far enough south and compact enough that they're well ahead of it.

I know Sandy caused havoc to NY/NJ terminal and Jewel and a NCL boat rode it out in Boston. It was cute cause Jewel left early but the NCL was docked when they got there. Pak's to Pak's were coming for you Bloomberg. They were both delayed due to the damages to the terminals.

Looks like maybe they will have a tad extra time to clean Ms. G. Have a great trip.

This week, Grandeur missed Coco Cay due to unsafe tendering conditions. Missing that stop allowed the Captain to get a head start on her northward trip back to Baltimore. I'll be boarding Friday, and I am optimistic that Arthur will not substantially impact the current cruise or ours, though I'll continue to watch the storm predictions in case the storm makes an unfortunate turn.

We cruised on EX about 5 days after Sandy. The terminal had been flooded, carpeting was pulled up and the waiting areas were not really set up. We were in a GS and were able to walk right out to the buses after checking in because of the delay getting to the port so we didn't see as much of the terminal. There were people with their damaged cars in the parking lots and a lot of people ended up not cruising with us because they lived where the damage was bad. We took Amtrak to Newark the day before the cruise which was the day after they started running again. Our hotel had power. On the ride to Bayonne we saw lots of damage, power outages, etc. Bayonne is much closer to the Atlantic and a lot more exposed than Baltimore.

Looks like GR is close to VA Beach and will be crossing the tunnel in a couple of hours, about 8 hours ahead of the normal schedule. That said, I expect they will dock at the normal time tomorrow morning. The Captain just wants to get into the bay before the storm gets that far north as it's going to bypass just off the coast. What he's really doing is avoiding the storm at the mouth of the bay which is where it would be close to overnight.

I am sitting in the Centrum of the Grandeur right now.

These two posts sum things up pretty accurately. I am on my phone - we are already in cell tower range.

Captain Espen is picking up the pilot early. Very soon. The shops will close early. The casino will close early.

I will be adding photos and information to my thread from last month, unless you think that I should start a new one.

Another great week on Lady G! ;)

Captain: "Bay Bridge Tunnel in half an hour. "

My guess of around 3 was pretty darn close lol.

Hope you had a great trip. We were on in March when deck 10 separated. That was a ride.

Thanks for the information and updates. 2nd cruise first on RC and first with son.

Does this mean G is coming in early? Or do people get to remain on the ship until tomorrow or am I reading this all incorrectly?

Sometimes people have to type slow for me to understand.....

:D

Thanks.

The ship might come into port early or it might hang out in the bay for a while and come in closer to on time in the am. Either way, those onboard will debark at the normal time and not get off early and those boarding will board as usual.
