NCl Sun Vancouver to L.A:Port or Starboard?

On a southern cruise along the Pacific Coast will we be able to see the coast if we book a Port side balcony cabin? Or is the ship too far off the coast most of the time?

 

Has anyone cruised this route?

I can only speak to my cruise on the Jewel....

 

We were too far from shore to see anything except an occasional twinkle of light during the night.

If you're visiting San Francisco, when going under the GG Bridge, the Starboard side will be give you good views of the City in the morning, but going out in the afternoon, you'll see the City best from the Port side.

 

While you're docked, you'll get better views from the Starboard side.

The Sun does not appear to be visiting San Francisco again in 2014 or 2015 for the southbound voyage, according to the Port of San Francisco schedule and NCL.com.

NayRN..I bet you could see lights from the Coast in that wonderful Villa you had!...Cruise more Often you are right. On the Jewel I had the Owners suite and that was a heck of a View going under the Golden Gate Bridge. The Wind about blew me away.

All of this is wonderful but the OP is asking about the Sun, which isn't going to San Francisco. :confused:

Port. If you're in your cabin leaving Vancouver you'll have a nice view of the skyline. Nice views in and out of Seattle. And the coastline sailing into Astoria. Between Astoria and LA the coast will be very very distant so nothing much to see, if anything, for those two sea days. Although if you're a fan of sunsets from your balcony, then starboard.

Port side it is - book early otherwise committed to starboard for sundowns

as previously noted.

Leaving Vancouver definitely Port but go topside to one of the

unobstructed decks for a better overall view.

Seattle Port side for land views of Mt. Rainer and the Space Needle this

upon departure. While berthed at SEA the starboard will have the views

all depending on how the ship is berthed and what pier(s) they are using !

Astoria starboard while berthed - port side on departure then again which

way is the ship berthed - Astoria town is on the south side of the Columbia

River across the river to the north is the state of Washington.

Take the trolley to the museum and walk-about the town!

San Francisco if stopping - starboard for city views and port for Alcatraz.

Probably will not see much in the early morning fog except the twin towers

of the Golden Gate. Bestest views of the Golden Gate from the highest

top most deck - wave at the wannabe cruisers on the bridge deck above.

Again all dependent on how the ship is positioned at the dock/berth !

When I did the Princess ship positioning in September 2006 we circled

Alcatraz due to the large volume of inbound freighter container ships.

YMMV

 

Just before the end the cruise the ship passes thru/by the Channel Islands

no specific information about which side is best - the second from the southern

most islands is Santa Catalina (Avalon) may be able to see the red tile roofs

of some of the island homes - then it is 26 miles across the sea to Long Beach !

Darn! end of the cruise not much pretty to note about the ship yard !

in San Pedro.

As I said in MY original response, I was on the Jewel.

 

Redheel Girl was just making a comment about my post/cruise on the Jewel...and of course, you've never posted off topic on a thread, correct?! :rolleyes:

 

And does it really matter which ship? The views would be the same on any ship!

The two online TA's that I usually use still have the original itinerary. I couldn't even find the cruise on Norwegian web site. I called just to see if there actually was a cruise but didn't think to ask the rep if the itinerary had changed. Heck, I was happy that there was actually a cruise leaving on the 29th! ;)
