Kids in Teppanyaki

I love that some folks say NCL is a family cruise line therefore you should expect kids. Somewhat true. NCL also offers a kid specific area and on some ships kids specific dining. Folks want kids sail free and half price (or free) dining, but don't want the responsibility that goes with it. It's kind of like smoking, your right to smoke ends at my nose. Your kids right to be kids ends at my annoyance. I don't tolerate unruly adults nor kids.

Two years ago on the Star, at Cagney's, a couple with a small child came in. The kid was screaming on the way into Cagney's and after about 15 minutes was still screaming. After about 4 or 5 complaints, the Concierge came in and offered to have the meal sent to their room. They made a scene "we paid the same as everyone else". One phone call later, security came and escorted them out. Concierge bought a round of drinks for the house and got a resounding ovation.

Well behaved children are welcome everywhere. Problem is, it's not your decision as to what "well behaved" means. It is the decision of those being disturbed.

Children shouldn't run amock in any restaurant. They should be taught manners. With that said I just got off breakaway. Breakfast in taste the one morning 2 kids were running all over the place and crawling under tables. No child should be allowed to do that anywhere. With that being said I did eat at teppanyaki. Was seated with 2 young children. They were very well behaved and very well mannered children. Our chef engaged well with them throughout the meal as well. The kids were so well behaved I saw them later that evening and commented to their mother how well they behaved throughout dinner. Parents need to have some control and then there should be no reason children can't enjoy the same meals as adults no matter what the age.

@silvercrikhix: very well said.

Regardless, I could never be so forward as to ask that someone else be moved. I would be too concerned that the potential ensuing argument could ruin dinner not only for both parties, but for the dozens of other diners in the room.

Thanks.

A well trained staff would do this without prompting, nor pointing out the source of the party asking for intervention.

I work as a waitress at a fine dining restaurant where it is very rare that parents bring in children. One night I had a family with a small child at one table and a older couple at another. The couple called me over to tell me that the child was misbehaving and wanted a manager to deal with the situation. After speaking with my manager, my manager came over to watch the table. after awhile the couple complained again and at this point my manager asked the couple to leave. My manager stated that the child was very well behaved and felt the couple was rude to the family.

My point is, what you may think is a child misbehaving is not necessarily what someone else might think.

As well as the couple should have been.

Some people are just jerks and or evil.

I assure you that DH and I are capable of discerning between well behaved and misbehaving/annoying/irritating kids.

My son is a picky eater, but I would like to go to Teppanyaki. Does anyone remember what the offerings on the kids menu were?

The free kids menu is your basic kids stuff - chicken nuggets/tenders, mac and cheese, hot dogs, etc. Been awhile since I saw a picture of it otherwise I'd post it.

  • 2 years later...

We took our ten year old son to Teppenyaki on POA and he absolutely loved it. He is a picky eater and surprised us by trying shrimp, but he loved the show and was respectful while everyone else was eating. We did take him to the buffet afterward. At all of the other specialty dining restaurants, he ordered something from the regular kids menu, but we didn't even think to ask for the kids' menu at Teppenyaki since the show is the main feature! (Pictures are on the second page of my review - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2252994 )

He enjoyed it so much from last summer that he asked to go again on our next cruise (full well knowing that he won't like the food!)

It is unfortunate that some parents don't take other diners into consideration and monitor their children's behavior at restaurants. We've been out where even my child has commented on how poorly behaved kids at other tables are. LOL

We have been cruising with our son since he was 4. He loves food and likes trying new things. We always try to do at least one specialty restaurant per cruise. When we walk in and pass other guests we many times get nasty looks for bringing in a child. It's so sad that he is judged even before they see how well behaved he is.

Once at Teppanyaki on the Pearl, a couple was seated with us, saw my son and then asked to be moved to the other table. My son felt bad but we still had a great time and he really enjoyed the meal. The couple ended up being seated with a group of adults probably over 30 that were very loud, raunchy and messy. I was secretly so happy :) They stopped us later during the cruise and apologized and said how impressed they were with our sons manners.

To the OP, I hope you at least give it a try and ignore all the people that would prefer there were no kids on the ships!
