Seriously, I am more than willing to "put up" with the art auctions if they put money in the HAL coffers to either enable Carnival Corp to pay higher dividends (which it just announced) or reduce cruise fares or both!

 

I believe the higher dividends have more to do with lowered fuel costs than people buying art. Besides, Doesn't HAL just rent the space to Park West? Or do they also get a cut of the sales?

Most likely they are following the Mall model. Where the space is rented and a cut of the sales are sent to the landlord.

Interesting observation - unfortunately without having access to HAL's Income Statement (which Carnival doesn't release to the public), it's difficult (if not impossible) to say whether the increased profits are a function of HAL's lower fuel costs or higher incremental revenue or are a result of overall improved profits at the other Carnival cruise lines. I'm really okay with either scenario, so long as it results in higher dividends for us shareholders.

Of course it is really about revenue for HAL. West Park rents the space and HAL gets a piece of the pie..... and I believe make a hefty lot of $$$$.

 

The artist will probably get $10 if the print goes to like $150 to $200. I got involved.. very briefly with auctions and not Park West. They offered me $5. For them to make a return the print had to sell for $30. So... they start at $100. They could you offer the print for $30!!! Wow! The auctioneer was making money. Anything else was pure gravy... except for the artist... he still get $5. It was one brief involvement and got out of them as quick as I could. Horrible people. He made one comment... "Hey it is easy. It is like taking candy from children!" I'm not making comments on Park West. Some other operator.

I read a book a few years ago written by someone who worked as an art auctioneer at sea. The book described his on-shore “training” and the business model of the art companies. The author (Brian David Bruns) claimed that many weeks he generated more revenue, at a higher margin, for the ship than either the bar department or the casino.

Well, if that's the case, the OP will most likely have to put up with "dreary" art auctions for years to come!

I also have lots of photos and collages of photos of places we've been--brings back good memories, doesn't it?

One of HAL's 2 star Mariner (or higher) benefits is a "a complimentary photo of the ship" per https://www.hollandamerica.com/myAccount/MarinerBenefits.action

 

I had never (automatically) gotten one and asked at the reception desk about it. They said I could go to the photo gallery and request one.

 

Just sayin': In case you are a 4 star Mariner (and not aware of the "complimentary photo" benefit); I believe that you can get a real nice (and free) photograph of the ship suitable for framing that would be an excellent memory of the cruise.
