It depends. If you are in a suite the hotel service charge will be $12 pp per day. If you are in an inside, ocean view or regular balcony cabin you will be charged $11.50 pp per day.

Do they automatically charge you? Or do you voluntarily leave this? We always tip more than the suggested amount but I am not sure how this works with HAL.

The Hotel Service Charge (tips) is automatically added onto your shipboard account each day.

And the tips are $11.50 - $12 per person per day.

We also tip extra to those whom we feel made our cruise an enjoyable one.

We do not remove the Hotel Service Charge as HAL has a rule that if you do, any extra tips you give to anyone must be turned in by the individuals and pooled among all crew members.

We always tip the cabin steward a bit more also. They take such good care of everything you will need. The service is superior, and a few extra dollars will make them so happy. Remember, the $12/day gets divided up amongst many.

:confused: That's a $3.50 difference for your whole cruise?

You can adjust it anytime at the front desk to either $0 or $60. The amount is just quite strongly "suggested" and you need to do something if you think another amount is more appropriate.

While reducing the service charge to $0 is just miserly, increasing it to $60 per day is well beyond what anyone would think necessary.

I think that was for the whole cruise, not per day, since the post mentioned a difference of $3.50 for the entire cruise

Ok, I got misunderstood here I think. With "to either $0 or $60." I meant: you can pick any amount you'd like, so if 12 is to much and 11.50 is ok, adjust it. Not something like "you have to choose between 0 or 60". Sorry! :)
