Inside the Carnival Ships That Made Cruising History

Recommended Posts

we were on the mardi gras in 87, inside cabin and the bathroom was bigger than the cabin.

I remember on the Carnivale, the cruise director joking about "where else can you sit on the toilet, take a shower, and brush your teeth all at the same time?"

I can't through the slideshow without it freezing up. Must be seeing a lot of traffic after posting it here. ;) I'll try again later.

This is my problem too and it keeps moving to other cruise articles...any ideas from computer savey folks?

I noticed about every third or fourth tick there's a ncl or celebrity add popping up, then a blank every once and a while

so maybe when those pop up click the advance again

I got thru all the mardi gras and the few carnivale and into the festivale then moved onto other stuff since we had only cruised on the Carnivale in those early days.

we were big NCL fans early, did the carnivale and weren't super impressed, then we did chandris amerikanis ( the cruise line became celebrity ) and loved the more formal service and their food was great! in those early cruises the next was Crown cruise line, a kind of budget price but neat little ships and traditional French continental cuisine, great food for the money but sheesh, who wants beef bourgenone at the poolside buffet? the only did burgers and dogs one day out of five on a cruise from west palm to key west and Cozumel ( speedy little converted car ferry we were on - the crown del mar ) They had another ship whose name escapes me that was a newbuild I think that swapped over successfully to another cruise line when they got bought up.

Try Firefox. I had the same problem with Explorer, switched over to Firefox and "smooth sailing."

I love this thread...

My first cruise was an old reclaimed Irish commuter..then Apollon 11 for Epirotiki as part of a Buget American Express Land and Sea tour in Greece and then Cairo and Jerusalem ports and a few Greek isles...I never would want the narrow falling off flip up mid wall bunk in the tiniest single inside again in my life. I was tiny then too burt still so narrow you rolled and fell off..like seamen's width but nobody above or below..I had a little tiny cabin..I had to keep telling self that..but everything else was so different ans wonderful and old fasihoned being served and all at dinner..and so many educated folks there for learning it all and a tour guide that knew it..a young Greek female historian...I love that age 20 memory on a 5000 ton "ship".

went on sunward II also!

neato ship, I think its still afloat........ nope, crap!

"She arrived in Alang for breaking on January 30, 2014" from Wikipedia if its correct

neato twin funnel ship, lots of stainless steel and blue carpeting when we sailed her - it was supposed to be renamed in 2014 but the plans were dropped and it was sold into scrap

quikie internet search will bring up pleny of photos on the net

Im guessing without study that 6-7 of the ships we have cruised are scrap now.

sunward 2, carnivale, Norway, regal empress, amerikanis, these 5 for sure scrapped

and maybe the crown del mar ( I heard one time it was reconverted back into a ferry ) not sure about oceanic and jubilee - the oceanic sat for years in Nassau back in the port but was put back into sercive a few years ago, the jubilee went to p and o for a while and was supposed to be a casino ship but not sure what the deal is now.....

and the celebration is sitting in Freeport or palm beach right now ( replacing the bahammas celebration ) I took pics of it in costa livery in dec! it had just been switched from Iberos to costa and just repainted, it still had the whale tale funnel.

I stumbled on this article from USA Today while reading an article about Arnold Donald and thought y'all may enjoy. It's got a great 77 pic slideshow of Carnival's first three ships.

I did finally get it to work with Internet Explorer. Took a few tries. Cool pictures. Nice to see what has changed and what has stayed the same. Lots of *real* woodwork on those old ships. My first cruise was the Destiny when she was really groundbreaking. It's hard to believe what a BIG deal she was back then - until you see the photos of what came before her and how really different she was. I then went on to sail on the Jubilee and Holiday. I love the big new ships now, but it's fun to see how far we've come.

My first cruise was on the brand new Tropicale in 1983. I was 23 and went with a friend of mine on a package with Singles World. The only way I could afford to cruise. We shared an interior cabin on the Riviera deck with two strangers. I became could friends with one of those strangers and ended up marrying one of the engineers she worked for....we're celebrating our 30th anniversary this April on the Dream

Our ports were Puerto Vallarta, Mazatalan and Cabo. We wore dresses, panty hose and heels to embark and dressed for dinners most nights. Still my favorite cruise.

...and I'll add my thanks as well. The Mardi Gras was our first cruise... a seven day honeymoon cruise sailing out of Miami on March 19, 1978. These pictures brought back a lot of memories, especially since we didn't have many pictures of the inside of the ship. We thought it was soooo big at the time, and I recall fantasizing about stowing away for another week when the cruise was over. After 37 years, we still celebrate our anniversaries on a Carnival cruise. Next up is the Valor sailing out of San Juan on March 15. :)

Thanks so much for finding this and sharing it with all.

I had to look up the subject in Mozilla and then run it..I missed quite a few slides I redid when read of more inside pics..wow.

Someone mentioned Appollon ..I was on the Apollon II..that I mentioned was originally an Irish commuter ship..it went down a few years later I rmember reading..maybe 10 years in a typhoon under another capacity.

I remember so much wood like those old photos...and that inlaid little squares of marble look on wood coffee tables...Danish "mid-centry"..having lived half a one don't you just love that term when it came out?? I remember being ill, clausterphobic and a little sick one day in that tiny cabin and I missed Santorini..I was there and MISSED IT!!

The tour guide was a bit less than understanding when I did not "show up"..lol..and took me to see the crew's digs..3/4 the size if mine and same tiny bunk but this gal did have her own inside...that same tour guide regretted loosing it with me and had me to her apt. in Athens before I had to go to next step on lucky grand voyage of a 20 year old!!
