Surfwench Posted April 16, 2015 #26 Share Posted April 16, 2015 I order the Funship Special because of tradition, but honestly, they have the same effect on me. I KNOW it's not the alcohol content because I can put away a number of Captain Morgan's and Diet Coke.... it's the sugar and fruit juices + alcohol. Besides sleepy, they make me feel bloated. Not a good combo.

MsMot Posted April 16, 2015 #29 Share Posted April 16, 2015 The drinks are by no means too strong. I think it is a matter of how one holds their liquor. Heck, we always get a floater on the frozen drinks:D The long island iced teas have just the right amount of alcohol in my opinion. Please don't give Carnival any more cutback ideas:eek:
asalligo Posted April 16, 2015 #30 Share Posted April 16, 2015 LOL, that is funny as I have often commented that a DOD would give me diabetes before getting me drunk. They often seem very high on the non alcohol content.

SMSACE6 Posted April 16, 2015 #32 Share Posted April 16, 2015 The drinks are expensive. I have usually found that they are the right strength for me, and when I had two twilight zones fairly close together last Novemeber, I found that maybe they were a little too strong for me:D, as I found myself sitting in a lounge chair, literally IN the "twilight" zone. lol. Also when I order my usual gin and tonic at atrium bar, just before dinner, I have always felt that it was a good ratio, booze to mix. It all works for me. I find the prices for drinks expensive, but am still willing to pay, since I find the drinks are the right strength for me. JMO.:)
momonthego17 Posted April 16, 2015 #33 Share Posted April 16, 2015 I agree about the sugar content, the DOD is usually way too sweet for me. We had the Cheers package on our past Sept cruise (when they dropped the price for 2 months:eek:) and I tried many of the special cocktails. Most of them were too sweet. My favorite was Sex on the Beach since it was made with OJ and cranberry juice and didn't have any premade "fruit punch". The taste of the cocktail seemed fresher and lighter. Gardeneroflove Posted April 16, 2015 #34 Share Posted April 16, 2015 It's funny how alcohol affects different people. It makes you sleepy and it makes me just want to drink more. sleepy here! I had a glass of wine before dinner, at dinner, and I'm still ready to drop. The issue I have is most have coconut and i hate coconut. I get sick from the sugar, in DOD before I get a buzz. DJW8385 Posted April 16, 2015 #35 Share Posted April 16, 2015 On my recent cruise on the Carnival Magic, I had the DOD (Pomegranate Lemondade) and it was strong but I had to stir it some more and it was perfect after that. So perfect, I ordered three more lol
manmachine Posted April 16, 2015 #36 Share Posted April 16, 2015 Order them virgin, smuggle on your own alcohol and adjust to your liking... :D But she'll need an eye dropper to measure it as well.

Love2Cruz2015 Posted April 16, 2015 #38 Share Posted April 16, 2015 I think their DOD's are just right...however their casino bar drinks.... Trya Mai Tai next time...now those are LOADED ....and of course, that is how I behaved until I got back to my cabin and puked it all up...I know TMI...but those bar drinks are free pour and heavy handed. Definitely get your money's worth there.
mistyinca Posted April 17, 2015 #39 Share Posted April 17, 2015 The DOD seems to be a weak pour. I usually request a hand pour not one from they're pre mixed jug. How do you get them to do this? I also find the pre mixed jug to have too much lime juice...hurts my stomach
SCcruiser123 Posted April 17, 2015 #40 Share Posted April 17, 2015 I find the Funship DOD is strong at embarkation but not so much later. I think it's just to get us "in the mood" for the cruise and keep us interested in future DODs.

FlaGrl4Evr Posted April 17, 2015 Author #44 Share Posted April 17, 2015 (edited) But she'll need an eye dropper to measure it as well. I am the OP and I think this is hilarious !!! Perhaps more than and eye-dropper but less than a turkey-baster. Out of all honesty though, after reading all of the posts, I really may be reacting to the sweetness of the mixers. My usual drink(s) of choice is a Mich-Ultra with a shot of Cuervo on the rocks to the side....or a Frozen Mudslide, which is not sweet at all but more of a chocolate-milk base. While I do limit myself to just a couple of these and am fine...... I cannot for whatever reason drink any of the DOD's or Carnival signature drinks. This is not a complaint against Carnival at all.... I will just need to search out other options, when I want a Frutie-tutie or frozen drink. Another poster had a great idea of ordering a Frozen Virgin drink and then asking for a single shot to then add to it. Bada-Bing problem solved. Thanks to everyone that responded..... I suppose different strokes for different folks. Happy Cruising to All !! Cari in Tampa Bay, Fla . Edited April 17, 2015 by FlaGrl4Evr
FlaGrl4Evr Posted April 18, 2015 Author #45 Share Posted April 18, 2015 (edited) :D Too much alcohol....that seems to be an odd complaint:confused: I am sure a bartender would be more than happy to reduce the amount of alcohol in any drink they mix...just ask for yours to be specially prepared and don't take the one off the tray. Problem solved. Dutch Girl, The purpose of my thread was not to complain... I was solely stating an observation based upon my own personal experience. I mentioed that in my post. I was only curious as to if any other fellow cruisers felt the same way about Carnival's DOD's and Signature Cocktails...... or if it was just me ??? I also stated that in the future I would not be taking the drinks off of the tray but instead visiting the bar and requesting the bartender to use a light-hand or reduce the amount of alcohol by one-half..... or just order a virgin cocktail and add a separate shot. I gained a lot of useful tips from my fellow CC'ers and am very grateful for their input. I am in no way saying anything negative about Carnival or how they make their drinks. After reading this thread, it appears that most cruisers enjoy the way the drinks are currently prepared with some stating that they feel they are somewhat on the weak side. The only reason that I even bothered to respond to your post is that since you joined CC a few months ago, the majority of your posts are snarky and downright flippant. I can recall a few that really should have been pulled from this board as they were hurtful to other posters. Your comment to me was not all that bad and I do have a thick-skin but it does tell me that you do not read through the posts before you are quick to lash-out and respond. We are all on this board to share tips about cruising , our experiences and such. It would really be nice if you could take some time and reflect on not what is said but how you say it. Wishing you a Blessed Day, Cari in Tampa Bay. . Edited April 18, 2015 by FlaGrl4Evr

Sparky2 Posted April 18, 2015 #47 Share Posted April 18, 2015 As I get ready to plan my next Carnival cruise it got me to thinking about their Drinks of the Day and other Signature Cocktails. On all 3 previous cruises with Carnival, I have found their drinks to be WAY too strong.... especially the DOD's. I have tried the same drinks on different ships so I do not believe that this is an isolated incident. They taste like pure alcohol with just a little of the mixer blended in. I can see how some might like this but to me, it is just a waste of money as drinking one or two, I will be back in the cabin sleeping hence Carnival losing money off of me in other venues such as the Casino etc.... I am wondering if they use a shot glass or pre-measure system or if the drinks are all free-pours. I never really paid attention as it seems that the drinks were brought around by the bar waiters on a tray.... I am thinking that on my next cruise I could possibly order a DOD and request that they use a very light hand with the alcohol. In addition, it seems that so many of the Carnival cocktails have lots of different types of alcohol blended into one drink. Many of their drinks consist of Rum with other types of alcohol added. I am not exactly a light-weight but for whatever reason just cannot seem to consume this much alcohol in one single drink. I suppose that I will stick to my standard Frozen Mud Slide or just request my Frozen Drinks be made with half of the alcohol content. I will probably just skip the DOD's all together. I am not complaining as it is solely my choice as to what I select to drink ...... I am just curious as to if anyone else feels that the cocktails are too heavy on the alcohol. . I'm not much of a drinker, but I enjoy my Chocolate Mocha Getaway & I don't think it has too much alcohol in it. However, at the Gold/Platinum/Diamond Party, some of those drinks are pretty strong.
