Liberty of the Seas 5-Night Bermuda 8/22 Review with Pictures

Recommended Posts

Great review! Like others have said, you have a wonderful writing style. So vivid. I can practically picture the Finish the Lyric game!

Your enthusiasm is contagious!

PS: thank you for the description of the Wonka Pie. I had always thought it was raisins and thus avoided it. I like custard and chocolate so may have to try it next time! And a Led Zeppoli or two, of course.

Day 2 - At Sea

I can never sleep on board a ship. In fact both my wife and I were wide awake in the early hours of the morning. 6:30 am found us up on deck 11 mid-ship seated in the shadows of the vacant pool deck silent witnesses to this enchanting world as twilight flickered aboard this floating oasis called Liberty of the Seas.

The pool sat tranquil, nary a chair hog’s towel nor jogger broke the calm. Only the deck patrol staff, the mysterious sandmen of the high seas dutifully engaged in their muted ritual of untying the knotted nets from the swimming pools and hot tubs. Then as the first shafts of light illuminated the darkened deck they disappeared again into the last vestiges of murky night leaving the pools pristine for passengers who at this hour were still fast asleep in their cabins.

We always enjoy breakfast in the Main Dining Room but, in this alter cruise universe we’d been visiting the white rabbit led us to the Windjammer. Into this barren victual filled void resplendent with every type of breakfast offering imaginable we arrived. Here amid floating islands sat great plates piled high with sausage, bacon and corned beef hash. Enormous cauldrons stacked with pancakes, waffles, biscuits and gravy. Huge tureens held oatmeal, cream of wheat and warm milk with a giant urn of brown sugar nearby to enliven this bubbling, breakfast brew.

At another station a mosaic of colorful cereal boxes beamed their hearty greeting to the day with their familiar raisins, rice crispies and bran flakes welcoming the weary wanderers who strolled into their midst.

It was indeed as if we passed into some hidden dimension to a secret chamber, brimming with exotic delicacies for passing travelers.

The Royal Caribbean crew members continue to wow us with their incomparable service. Ovi from Croatia kindly brought me a cup of coffee each morning, he always seemed to appear like a wizard, just when you realized something was missing from your morning repast.

We sat enjoying our breakfast in this spacious dining arena at the aft of the ship the vast ocean stretched out behind us like a giant blue quilt rippling gently as if it was being set upon its gargantuan sea bed. The next moment a groggy stranger with a scruff of beard and wavy hair appeared into our feast filled sanctum. Apparently awed by the wonderment of goodies set out before him he exclaimed “Is this Heaven”? Indeed.

As we sipped our coffee and nibbled our bacon, container ship sized clouds floated across the sky while Brian Wilson crooned his mellow lullaby of “God Only Knows How I Can Live Without You”. We are liking alter-universe cruising.

Back at our mid-ship perch we sip our warm coffee and enjoy the scenes of a waking ship, the quiet parade of cruisers strolling along the deck, the officers making their rounds. On a nearby pastel back splash the silhouettes of people jog by. The Liberty of the Seas is awake and another wonderful day of adventure is set to unfold before us.

Will definitely let you know Jonathan. Would not want to miss your countdown

Thanks Marietta, hope it works out.

Thank You So Much Windjamming, I really appreciate that. Maybe you'll like the Wonka Pie. It's just that the set-up of Wonka evokes all the joy of being lost in a world of sweets but, the payoff is rather dull.

Perhaps if it was just called freckled flan it would be delicious ;)

Give it a shot.

Thanks for the review. Keep it coming. We sail on Liberty on Saturday.

Thanks for following Kitty1, have a great cruise on Liberty.

Cruise Critic Slot Pull

At 11:00 our faithful group of Cruise Critics assembled at the Schooner Bar on deck 4 forward and made our way into Casino Royale in an attempt to extricate a small fortune from one of the flashing slot machines within.

Schooner Bar - Home to Trivia and the Best BBC's on the High Seas by Devan

I had visited the casino the prior evening in an attempt to ferret out our winning machine but, only ended up making a donation. It’s certainly an inviting spot with its mural of Rat Packers adorning the wall as you enter but, rather labyrinthine in its layout. On several occasions I found myself strolling past the banks of machines trying to locate a particular slot to no avail then getting lost in the process. Perhaps this is by design.

casino.jpg

The fifteen of us assembled at the foot of this gleaming giant Wheel of Fortune Machine. One can’t help but be enthralled by this captivating cash magnet with its wagon wheel sized spinner filled with fat numbers and those dizzying zero’s. No one would ever divulge their inner thoughts but, who hasn’t for a minute dreamed of striking the mother lode and calling work to say “Not gonna be in next week I’ll be cruising through 2016”.

35560ac1-564f-418b-9eab-4bf9636028b5.jpg

As the Slot Pull organizer I gathered the funds of each of our participants, then fed each bill into the machine. We each took turns, four pulls per couple, two per single. Round and round the reels rotated carrying all of our dreams with them.

Round and Round She Goes...

You need to bet the max to trip the Wheel of Fortune mechanism and after ten or so tries, the machine spoke to us in a trio of shouts that brought a gaggle of goose bumps to us all. “WHEEL OF FORTUNE”! the machine exclaimed triumphantly. The above wheel spun wildly that distinctive rattling sound further enhancing the excitement as we all shouted and cajoled the machine to deliver us to the coveted Big Money payout.

The next moment the machine dial pointed at $50 and we whooped a time or two then set off again and again to win papa a brand new cruise. Several turns later yours truly garnered a $100 windfall which reaped hoots from our loyal ranks while Cruise Critic Dena busily totted up the potential winnings split on her calculator. It pays to have a math teacher in your group.

We cashed out of the Wheel and tried our luck on the lobster slot at the recommendation of one our crew, but, the lobster was shellfish that day and only took our loot to Davy Jones Locker. Back to the Wheel and after a half dozen spins we called it a day. Dena’s computations had us all receiving $15 each.

Ask And Ye Shall Receive My Dad Always Says

I took our receipt and went up to the cashier. As fate would have it the Assistant Casino Manager was on duty. I told him we had just donated a hefty amount at the casino as part of our Cruise Critic Slot Pull and would it be possible to get a few t-shirts and caps as a consolation prize. Zsolt kindly obliged and a moment later I was walking back to our group with a half dozen colorful Casino Royale T-Shirts and a couple of caps. Thank You Zsolt and thank you Royal Caribbean, I really love this cruise line.

Loyal to Royal - Thank You Zsolt We Love Our Casino Royale T-Shirts!

The Slot Pull is a really fun event win if you don’t have one set up for on your roll call do so. Everyone gets a charge out of it, in more ways than one.

Cupcake Class

My wife Elene is an accomplished cook and baker and once I’d learned there was a cupcake class on board Liberty I didn’t hesitate to book a class for her. With its candy cane striped pink awning and glass case filled thick frosted cakes it’s an easy and inviting detour off of the Royal Promenade.

We stopped in there to confirm Elene’s class and Chef Marlon Eugenio sprung to action and checked her name on the list. Chef Eugenio is a lovely colorful character. His gregarious and mirthful nature is as sweet as the frothy confections he cooks up at his bakery. His resume is quite impressive. Chef Eugenio began as a galley cook and worked his way up the ladder until Royal Caribbean tapped him to head the Cupcake Cupboard across the fleet.

The cupcake du Jour was a fluffy dog. From the first cake wedge to the chocolate sprinkle whiskers to the jelly bean tongue Chef Eugenio’s friendly manner presided over his protégés. Slowly and gradually as the David emerges from a block of granite so too did a team of fluffy yellow dogs materialize from great dollops of frosting. The final touch a blob of icing squeezed out just so to provide the pooch a happy tail to wag for a job well done. Elene loved the class, she thought Chef Marlon was a great teacher and she learned a great deal from him.

Binky Our Dog - Rather Striking Resemblance And Just As Sweet

Chef Marlon is a kind-hearted man and good sport as attested over dinner by our table mates Casey and Alex. The talented pastry chef had upon their request cooked up both a Coca Cola cupcake and Bacon Maple. Judging by the enthusiastic dinner banter, the cakes were a big hit. “It really did taste like Coca-Cola”, Casey added.

The lesson ended with a round robin as each cake decorator named their puppy cupcakes. After Elene’s cake was saran wrapped we made for the Windjammer for large glass of milk and a couple of forks, there was work to be done, my favorite part of cup cake class.:D

Any comments or suggestions on getting a drink package? Enjoy yourself!

Here's a link to the latest drink prices on Royal Caribbean:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2176366

The premium package is $55 per person each day. Based on the cocktails you most enjoy you can pretty much figure out whether it's worthwhile. Typically you have to have between four and six drinks daily to come out ahead.

Enjoy your cruise.

When we were on Liberty last Dec we did a slot pull on the $5 WOF machine (in the middle) and we cashed out with over $1,300. Around $40/pp after a $15 buy in.

Excellent review. Thanks for sharing

Wow, that's impressive. That's what you have to play the highest amount possible and feed as much cash in there. I read on the Daily Compass the Liberty paid out $250K in Slot Machine winnings, next time I'll wear my lucky Casino Royale T-Shirt and hope for a big payout. :D
