iiramos Posted November 4, 2015 #1 Share Posted November 4, 2015 I have Verizon....When getting off the stop in various ports, can you just turn your mobile data off and use Wi-Fi through your phone and not incur charges? CruiserBruce Posted November 4, 2015 #2 Share Posted November 4, 2015 Yes, if you find a location that is offering free wifi. May cost you a coffee, or a beer. Are you familiar with getting free wifi at Starbucks or McDonald's? Same thing.
Rare FlyerTalker Posted November 4, 2015 #3 Share Posted November 4, 2015 Be aware of security risks using "free" wifi. Highly suggest you read up on VPNs and hotspot security.
xlxo Posted November 4, 2015 #4 Share Posted November 4, 2015 (edited) Yes, if you find a location that is offering free wifi. May cost you a coffee, or a beer.as well as your identity through your userid's and passwords.... While public wifi is affordable.... some of that wifi may be questionable with data loggers harvesting user id's and passwords. I use a VPN like SurfEasy when on public wifi. NBC's Today Show had a great piece on all the hacked "free" wifi spots in tourist heavy cities worldwide. Better way to go is international data plan and tether to partner provider's network in port. Have done that for British Isles cruises where I'm in one country - same for a cruise in Australia and South Africa. While in Vietnam, I got a local sim plus 500mb of data for the huge price of $6. In the UK, it was about $12 for the same. Great value and lets you use the phone for GPS mapping around town.
iiramos Posted November 4, 2015 Author #9 Share Posted November 4, 2015 I just have to check email at least once during the cruise, so a quick few minutes on Wi-Fi should do it! Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk
Sea Hag Posted November 5, 2015 #10 Share Posted November 5, 2015 But isn't free wifi a right:D;)? Yes. Yes, it is.
Rare FlyerTalker Posted November 6, 2015 #11 Share Posted November 6, 2015 Yes. Yes, it is. And by that logic, so is a malcreant's right to hack into your system through the wifi.
