Question about use of multi port USB charger

So I understand the reasoning for the no surge protection in a power strip. I am purchasing this for the first part of our trip which is 10 days at Disney World, what Im curious about is if I will be able to use this on the ship. There is no mention of surge protection I can find, its in essence just a wall charger for a phone. Thanks all.

Helps if I add link

Whats funny is I thought I saw that, but I was looking at multiple ones, then I reread and didn't see it. My bad

Ok anyone have any suggestions on a multi port charger, preferably at least 6 or 7 ports. Havent bought this one yet, so I might as well get something I can use on both parts of the trip!

Maybe something like this? I don't know if you could get an adaptor for the other outlet and then plug this into it. I really don't know anything about how the currents convert. There are other ones that are cheaper and this one doesn't have that good of a pic but hopefully you can get the idea. And it's a 2 pack.

So pardon me if Im misunderstanding you, but can I plug a surge protected device into that grounded plug?

No. I meant to utilize the 220 outlet by getting a converter if you need more than one 3 outlet bar. But I would rely on someone that knows if that's a good idea or not. I have heard of people doing it, but I haven't.

I have researched this, and all Anker products are surge protected. Here is a post I put on another thread, where I list some multi-port USB devices that are not surge protected:

Thanks javafish and chengkp75. I appreciate the help.

Think I'll get the Zilu and the Aukey, with both I'll get the charging ports I need and I wont need another power strip.

Thanks again, much appreciated!

On a second look, this means surge protection to me, am I correct? "Built with over-current protection to protect against dangerous high current, on/off switch with light." That's from the Aukey

here is what we use. I really like that fact that the plug rotates.

This one has been discussed so many times. It is not allowed as it is a surge protector. Please look at the previous posts and choose one that isn't.

Why pay $40 when you can buy a 6 plug power strip for $5. All devices come with USB connectors. Most are common connectors, so you only need 2-3 at a time if you use a lot of devices.

that would not work as the plug is too high. The outlet on the Dream was very close to the desk top. This is what we use

The link you provided doesn't work. But I think it would be just fine. Note the orientation of the ground plug. The total height is only 4 inches and I believe there is enough room both below and above. Oh, if only I had a cruise booked so I could find out for myself :(

I used a Anker 5 port on our last cruise, without any problems.

And you may be able to use it several more times without any problem, or it might fail the next time you use it. It depends on the quality of the MOV's used to make it, and the power onboard the ship at the time you are using it. There are always small incidental grounds on a ship, and you can never tell when one will produce enough low voltage reverse spikes to cause the MOV's to fail.

On our last (and first) Australian cruise they asking if we had power boards in our luggage. They didn't distinguish as to the type, and this was at several points prior to embarkation. Once we got on I asked our steward if we could have one and he had one to us very quickly. I don't get why they were confiscating every type of power board. Makes me twitchy about bringing even a non surge protected one on board.

I'm sure there's a valid reason for it, and I will follow the rules, but why can't you use surge protectors on ships?

I always thought they added a little safety. (I'm clearly not electrical minded.)

They are a potential fire hazard. A few months ago Chengkp posted a very detailed report. As I understand it:eek: Ships cannot be grounded because they aren't on the ground ;):p. Ship electricity is wired differently than land-based structures.

We've been bringing a small three way splitter. The other day I bought a three outlet extension cord from Ikea that'll work better for my fan (longer cord). We use a plug adapter for the 220v.

ETA-I See javafish found the report.
