MarKay525 Posted May 29, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 29, 2016 Last Sunday (May 22) we sailed out of Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, NJ with Capt. Kate at the helm. We were looking forward to sailing under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, but we got an extra special Sail-Away when Capt. Kate "hung a left" out of the port and sailed past the Statue of Liberty before doing a 180 and continuing under the Bridge and off to Bermuda. :D Apparently it was the first time this Bermuda season that the weather/marine traffic had permitted this maneuver. Several staff and crew were on deck along with the delighted passengers to enjoy an absolutely fantastic close-up view of the Statue. We also had a great horn battle with the NCL Breakaway passing by on her way to the Bridge. If you are on a future cruise to Bermuda with Capt. Kate (who is delightful), I hope you will also get to "buzz the Statue" as you sail out of the harbor.

As reported on an earlier thread this week, this was done last year before she took over the Summit so hopefully everyone will be able to enjoy this special treat. Only pointing this out since she goes on vacation at some point and it should be done by her replacement. Hope we are able to do it again in a couple of weeks with Catain Kate.
teckelmom Posted May 30, 2016 #7 Share Posted May 30, 2016 At our Connections Party (may 22 sail) I asked Captain Kate about how she is able to get permission to sail north to the Statue. She said her staff told the port that it is a SOP for the Summit to do so when conditions permit. The Capt. seemed surprised herself that the port allows the ship to do it. Wonder if they did it yesterday since it was fleet week and there was lots of traffic in the harbor.
