Book Early Huh???

Are you sure your insurance will not help you? A lot of the online policies I have read and purchased before cover travel companions and them cancelling. I can't remember if it covers their loss of job, but it covers some things concerning the person you travel with having to cancel and affecting you plans.

i book early saver and only do so during deposit sales ($50 pp). i would never book early saver with a regular deposit.

Just an FYI: If you price match you will have to pony up the remaining deposit. Even if you are aware of this others might not know. Education is the key to not being disappointed.

YES! My PVP made sure I understood this when I booked the reduced ES rates. Last cruise I caught a $50 OBC for the rate and applied for it. What I didn't know was it was $30 more total rate. So I only came out about $20 ahead in the end. It could have been a more expensive mistake, so I'm glad it really wasn't.

Oh I am an old hand at that sort of thing.

I mostly hang out at the RCI board and have had many flame wars with the Royal Carribots. :D My reviews have on occasion gotten me sent to the principal too. LOL

Yes, I know what you mean, it's like being called to the naughty room. I got canned on the smoking thread, they didn't like me rubbing it in that smoking was no longer allowed on balconies.:D

Calm down. You didn't lose your deposit. you still have $450 credit sitting in your account that is good for 2 years.

Okay just for you I took 3 benzodiazapines and now I am serene enough for even the Hindus to consider me dead. LOL :p

Curious where I sounded "uncalm" in all this but you must be a better diagnostician than I.

We all know that the cruise lines want us to book early right?

We all know that the lowest prices and certainly the choice of cabins are best done way in advance right?

We all know that a cruise is cancellable before final payment right?

NOT SO FAST.........................

In March we booked Carnival Sunshine out of New York with two cabins and a $500.00 deposit on each. Final payment would have been due next week but, due to loss of employment by one of the party, we had to cancel. No big deal correct???

NOT SO FAST. Yesterday I received an email from my TA telling me that the cruise deposit was "non-refundable" and that we can either go on the cruise or accept a $450.00 credit to be used within 2 years. SAY WHAT??

So apparently, aside from all the various service cuts and staff reductions ( not just Carnival but across the industry) Carnival, at least, has adopted the business model of the airlines. NON refundable deposits? Really??

Other than cabin choice, why would I now book early and risk being penalized for letting the company play the float on my money?

I had never cancelled a cruise before so this may be more common than I realized. Anyone else know about this ........ stuff?

Where have you been? this early saver policy has been in effect forever.

::smh:: i thought I made it clear I have been an RCI loyalist.

A question was asked, your response while both accurate and condescending, was thoroughly useless. I assume you are a politician or a beaureaucrat at some level.

So glad to see there is a Carnival analogue to the Royal Carribots. If I were going to be on this board more often, I would think up a group name so you guys could have parties and little get togethers.

so apparently you booked a cabin not knowing what rate you were booking under..es..and now you are blaming carnival. fully understandable.

btw, early saver has been around for at least, minimum of 5 years.

::SMH::yet again. How many times in this thread did I say MY FAULT? Is your attention span that gnat comparable?

Guys and Gals, I asked my question and got a lot of good and useful responses. Thanks to those who can actually read, comprehend and formulate those responses.

To the Carribot analogues who have come out from under their rocks lately, pleased to meet you. You should join up with the crew on the RCI board. As much fun as y'all are I am tired of playing so you'll just have to play with yourselves after this.

LOLOL glad there's at least one more here. Maybe see you in the principal's office next time. You would probably enjoy finding the reviews that got me slapped on the knuckles. I am still waiting for my steak knives from my fifth warning.

I will admit I sometimes feel like a bully having a battle of wits with those who are only half prepared. :D

To the OP, you can still decide to go on the cruise if you have not cancelled yet. Would the person that lost their job not be understanding if the others still went?

Or just bite the bullet and apply the $450.00 to another cruise and try to get the fee waived. Nobody likes to lose $50.00

I had to re-schedule an Early Saver rate. I did lose the $50.00 but I applied the deposit to another cruise with a better rate so I actually was ahead of the game. Perhaps you can find a cruise with a better rate to absorb the fees.

Sorry I missed this one. Of course you're correct. We could still go but honestly, we were only going as company. I have seen the fog in Canada many times. We'll save the money and use it to take our granddaughter somewhere.

I was a travel agent for almost 25 years and I just find it so hard to believe so many travelers are not told of the penalties. Are these brick and mortar travel agents or online travel agents? At our agency we actually had our clients sign a copy of the cancellation policy and kept it on file and yes some clients would come back and say we never told them but we had their signature on file. Sometimes one spouse would know but the other spouse didn't. Since these fares have been around for a long time an experienced travel agent would know the pitfalls of not offering both options. A passenger confirmation from the cruise line is always sent to the travel agent detailing the penalties. If a travel agent actually erred with this they should definitely be responsible for reimbursing the $50 per person.

Well, that's the rule that's been there since Day One of CCL starting Early Saver.

I book ES and have gotten price drops on most of our cruises. This year is different as we booked ES with our Casino offer and though we haven't gotten any price drops this time we still booked at a low price for this cruise so either way, getting a price drop or not I get the best price possible for us and we cruise once a year so if we ever have to cancel we'll put it right on a cruise for the following year

Thank you for the knowledge and insight.

I afree that my TA should have let me know but, honestly she has done me such good work on 15 cruises, including calling me with price drops, that I would not let a $50.00 loss terminate a 10 year successful relationship.

Ain't none of us perfect a d, again, I am a big boy who can read for myself. I do research a lot but missed this one.

I probably will too. I just feel better knowing the rules.
