We'll be check in with set sail passes and passport cards' date=' 2 adults and an infant. Is that okay?[/quote']

Good question. We always take both our passport books (which we use on

check in and then keep in the safe) PLUS our passport cards (that we use in ports).

Have never tried to board with just the passport cards. Would be interesting to hear

other experiences with that.

However, if a problem should come up in a port (and it does in some cases, but

hopefully won't have to ever experience that) you would need your passport book to

book an international flight back home.

Passport cards are acceptable for US based closed end cruises.

I was leaving on Allure two years ago and managed to leave my set sail pass in the rental car. It took me no longer to check in than my travel mates who had their's as they checked in next to me.

I suspect we will see them disappear completely in the next few years. Just a big waste of paper anyhow. I can fly all over the world, check in and out of hotels, rent cars, buy meals and services, and never need to deal with paper. The cruise lines will catch up soon.

The cruise industry is very slow moving forward technologically. Last year DW and I took a Canada/New England cruise out of Boston. As Nexus members and travelling only between Canada and the US, we didn't need our passports but brought them along out of force of habit. Just as well, as the staff at the Black Falcon cruise port terminal were flummoxed by the Nexus cards. Even the supervisor insisted that, without passports, we wouldn't be able to board. On an Alaskan cruise the year previously we'd had no problem. Same line, different port and very different... training? Willingness to adapt?

We saw it as an option during online check in so we went with it. Thank you.:)

Thanks Bob. I just would not want to have to worry if an "Alpha Alpha Alpha"

was called for us and had to fly home.

I agree. We bring both the card and the booklet.

You are welcome. I am just an old girl scout...always be prepared, but hope

I don't need it.

We also love using our passport cards...so much more convenient, and wish

they would totally replace the books. Not sure why the books have to be

used on international flights versus the cards, but perhaps that will change

in the future also. :)

Agreed. My wife and I have books too, but we only got our daughter the card for the first time.

Maybe it'll go all electronic at some time in the future, but many countries still stamp your passport on entry and/or exit, and may require visa documents to be in your passport, as well. That doesn't work so well with the passport card.

Funny thing is, and though I would love to have it stamped, most of the countries

we visit don't bother to stamp the passport, in fact some people ask to have it stamped

for the memory page. ;)

The DH used to travel constantly for his career in other countries years ago and needed

extra pages! But the stamps became less and less over the years.

You are absolutely right, and I agree. But until then...... ;)

I agree. But I think people tend to vastly overstate both the necessity of having the set sail pass, as well as the consequences of not doing so. The "delay" for them to print the document is maybe in the order of 15-30 seconds, and likely actually inconsequential as they will be doing other parts of check in at the same time.

A passport IS picture ID.......

No ship, Sherlock. But many people still like to bring a picture ID in addition to the passport, because it's easier and more convenient to carry around a driver's license or similarly-sized picture ID.

True, but I think Tigerlady was just trying to be helpful and suggest a picture

ID ALONG with your passport. Personally I prefer (as do others) to take a DL

or passport card instead of your bulky passport when going ashore into ports.

Port Authorities require your sea pass card AND your photo ID when coming

back on board at most ports. Our passports stay in our cabin safe.

I prefer my passport card as photo ID, which is smaller than the book passport,

to slip into my pocket with the sea pass card.

To each their own. ;)
