Santa barbara

Go to the Mission. It's one of the most beautiful and interesting in California. About 45 minute walk uphill from the ocean, so maybe take a cab or city bus uphill and walk downhill back toward the ship. The walk takes you through the thriving and lovely downtown.

'Island of the Blue Dolphin' by O'Dell gives a basic history of the Native Americans living during the Mission period. Its required reading for learning about CA history. The gal that the story revolves around is buried at the Mission.

We spent 2 full days there. One day we rented electric bikes (great for those hills) and toured around the city, beach, Mission, Urban Wine Trail, etc. There are some great restaurants as well. Our 2 favorites were Milk & Honey and La Playa Azul Cafe.

We had a rental car and spent another day in wine country.

Has anyone suggestions on how to spend the day in Santa Barbara exploring on our own

We are fit and active so walking not an issue.

Thanks

My best visit to SB featured a self-guided tour of city hall, so much more fascinating than the mission (seen one, seen 'em all). City Hall is a gem of lavish Moroccan tile work, historic murals depicting California's historic eras, a fantastic bell tower with panoramic views of the city. It's also a working municipal building so you get a taste of past and present at the same time. A don't miss!

Last year when we visited Santa Barbara we visited the Mission and City Hall on our own. Just across the street from where we were docked were several shuttle vans. The one we took was app $10 ea (round trip) and it drops off at the Mission and City Hall. He makes the rounds and returns apx very 45 min or so. We caught the return from the Mission where we were dropped off at City Hall. From City Hall we walked a couple of blocks to State Street Main shopping restaurant area of Santa Barbara where we strolled up and down the streets.

FYI. The Santa Barbara Trolley you cannot buy tickets at the dock when cruise ships are in port. We tried to last year but they are all sold as excursions.

There is however an electric bus that runs along State Street and along the waterfront to near where the ship docks that costs about 50 cents each time you hop on. It however does not go up the hill to the Mission.

We were there just yesterday. We are season ticket holders to the zoo. Even though we could choose LA Zoo my grandkids love the one her in SB. On our cruise this past April we had booked the Hot Rod limo. Unfortunately the car was in an accident the week before. Well, we were there this past weekend and they were just bringing the car back up on line. WooHoo! What a ride. It was amazing fun. It takes 8 people and you can get an hour tour or 1-1/2 hours and visit a winery. With little kids we bypassed the wine but it was such a great time there is no way I can't recommend this "excursion". It is hard to miss. An 8 person convertible car with racing flames down the side and Beach Boy music playing. Check it out everyone!
