Venice vaporetto

Flight arrives at Marco Polo at 7:30 am. Cruise leaves at 5 pm. When bags are loaded onto transport to cruise terminal, will we have to claim them prior to boarding or will they be transferred automatically to our cabin? We would like to take vaporetto # 1 from Piazzale Roma to San Marco and back again. Not certain if we have time or not. Anyone done this & were you pressed for time? Any info would be appreciated.

So you're taking a cruiseline transfer from the airport to the pier, right?

Even if you do need to claim your bags before boarding, you have plenty of time to get to St Marks and back.

It's only a 20 minute bus ride from Marco Polo to the pier. Even with collecting luggage, immigration, waiting for the other bus pax, you would be out of the airport by 9:30, 10am at the latest. Off the bus by 10:30, walk to the People Mover, for a 3 minute ride to Piazzale Roma, then walk 2 blocks to the Grand Canal for the vaporetto. The #1 leaves frequently and takes about 45 minutes.

If you do need to claim your luggage, just allow for an hour for the return trip.

I have never been to Venice before (or anywhere in Europe). Will it be fairly easy to know when we should get off the #1 vaporetto from Pizzale Roma to San Marco if we aren't familiar with the area? I have looked at a map but find it a little overwhelming.

To make it very easy on yourself, disembark at San Zaccaria, which is the stop just beyond St Marks. This will allow you to see St Marks from the water and you can feel assured that you're at the right stop ! The stops are quite close together.

This map of the St Marks area shows the San Marco stop which is in front of the gardens/trees. ( stops are marked with a cruiseship symbol ). Then move the map to the left and you'll see the San Zaccaria stop.

There is an announcement for each stop also.

Since you will be coming from Piazzele Roma, you will have ample time to figure out the process and stops. There are many stops before you will get to San Marco so you can take note of what to look for at the stops. There is a person who works the gates on the boats at each stop and he/she will yell out the name of the stop nicely (with an Italian accent, so you'll have to factor that in). I can't recall if they announce the "next stop" or not, but you could memorize the stop before San Marco just in case. Also at each stop you will see yellow signs with the stop name very visibly displayed.

This link shows several pictures of the station buildings and the signage to expect and look for.

Thank you all for the wonderful info. We spent a couple of days in Venice @ 15 years ago & rode the vaporettos up & down the Grand Canal & had a fabulous time. We're looking forward to riding up & down the canal next month prior to boarding the cruise ship.

Just make sure you get the vaparetto heading in the right direction. On our first time in Venice we got on to go to St Marks Square but caught it in the wrong direction. We had a lovely tour of some off-the-beaten-track places but wouldn't have liked to be on a tight time schedule. There is a diagram above the vaparetto stop (like a metro map) showing the direction and the stops it will call at.

  • 1 month later...

Just returned from Venice:used People Mover 1.50 euros pp from the port to P. Roma.Purchased a 3 day pass 40 euros pp at Canal.requested a schedule of stops which was helpful to know what stops the vaporetto made.

At each stop is a board with times which tell you when the boat stops in both directions. Since there are more than one line using the grand canal...if you are using the RED Line check the boat when it arrives as it will have Lido or P Roma on the side. So if you are at P. Roma ask which terminal is for#1 to Lido. Once on board somewhere overhead will be the list of stops if you couldn't get one when you purchased your ticket. Once at San Marco you can either check and take a picture of the times back to P. Roma or you can venture on foot to Rialto Bridge which also has 2 stops before and after the bridge. Same vaporetto only closer to your stop at P. Roma. It is helpful to keep track of how long it takes to get from one point to another.
