griz400 Posted January 8, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Didn't sleep well last night, so looked at computer for a while, looked at webcams, seen the jade sailing in at 11:30 or so last night ... I believe it was the Jade. Here is the webcam http://www.porttampawebcam.com/ It is supposed to be here today, it was dark and couldn't tell , still cant tell if it is the Jade. They didn't zoom in on it yet .Wonder if there is a mechanical issue of some sort ?? Edited January 8, 2017 by griz400
KyleClark Posted January 8, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 8, 2017 From another group I've read that they have been working on the Jade intermittently with divers. Last night pax were told their is nothing wrong with the ship just general maintenance. Someone thinks that they are using the band-aid approach until the ship hits drydock. Also noted they started taking down the pool slide this past cruise to make room for the music charter. I read pax were not happy with the noise and dismantling while trying to enjoy the pool. Kate45 Posted January 8, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 8, 2017 What about passengers still booked in the next few weeks? Don't they get to enjoy the water Slides? If I was a parent with kids, I'd be upset that I wasn't getting what I paid for.
the_dylaness Posted January 8, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 8, 2017 Just off the jade. More later but I am MAD about the slide. I came on this cruise with my mom and my 5 year old daughter, mostly to just relax. Our port in Key West with change, and I understand why, but I'm pretty upset that we couldn't do one of our main goals which was to relax at the pool and let my daughter use the waterslide. The main pool was out of commission the entire last day due to chili weather and rough conditions, totally understandable, but the two times I checked on the day before, when we were in Cozumel, it was also closed both of those times. You can say what you want about enjoy the other aspects of the cruise, but one of the main reasons any five-year-old wants to go to one weather and be on a cruise ship is probably to swim and she couldn't do that. This was my first NCL cruise and am totally disappointed to be honest.

What are you really going to do except vote with your wallet elsewhere... That is how NCL rolls with FDR.

timf2001 Posted January 8, 2017 #9 Share Posted January 8, 2017 What was wrong with "key west port "? Fog delayed their initial departure so they skipped Key West and did an overnight in Cozumel instead. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2438155

I don't believe this is a "band aid" maintenance until drydock. What I believe is happening, from what I've gathered, is that the ship is changing its lubrication oil in the azipods and thrusters to "environmentally friendly" oil (I know, sounds like an oxymoron, but many ships, including the one I'm on now, use this stuff, which is approved by all nations). This oil does require rubber seals with a different composition from those seals used with regular hydraulic/mineral oils, so the divers are changing the seals. Rare BirdTravels Posted January 8, 2017 #11 Share Posted January 8, 2017 What was wrong with "key west port "? The port was closed due to fog. The ship left late that evening (earlier than the "next day" originally forecasted. They went straight to Cozumel and overnighted there giving passengers an extra 11 hours in port. broadwaycam Posted January 9, 2017 #13 Share Posted January 9, 2017 I board next Sunday and hope the pools are open and that they are not doing construction or putting up the stage for the music charters. Would not be happy.

But,they couldn't wait until dry dock for that? I assume they've been using the current oil for a long time. Is 6 to 8 weeks really going to have such an environmental impact, that they're cutting cruises short to implement it immediately? This isn't the first cruise they've cut short. I assume they've been using the current oil for a long time. Is 6 to 8 weeks really going to have such an environmental impact, that they're cutting cruises short to implement it immediately? This isn't the first cruise they've cut short. Their old seals may be on the way out, and needed renewal now, to prevent further leakage. One very common problem with propeller shaft seals is ingestion of monofilament fishing line and nets, which will get wound tight, melt, and get under the seal, lifting it up and causing oil leakage. They may have noted that their seal oil tanks are losing oil very slightly, and are not at the stage where the USCG is involved (visible oil sheen) requiring immediate stoppage and renewal, but they have to make a good faith attempt to repair as quickly as possible. Especially if drydock is imminent, the seals may be at the end of their life, typically renewed during drydock. Question, are they actually cutting cruises short, i.e. deleting ports, or are they just booking it back to Tampa to get in early? orlandodolly Posted January 10, 2017 #16 Share Posted January 10, 2017 We were on the 26 December sailing on the Jade and we arrived in Tampa approximately 11:30pm on 2 January. We were told that there was nothing wrong with the ship but that they had to make changes to a more environmentally friendly oil and that the repair required divers. At first, most passengers were upset as they closed all the shops and casino at 7:30pm. However, to be awake to go back under the bridge was awesome. Oceangrace Posted January 13, 2017 #17 Share Posted January 13, 2017 I was thinking that they would reinstall the slide during the dry dock in March. I thought we were on the first sailing after the dry dock on April 9th, but I see now that there is 1 last music cruise on April 4th. I guess that means that they will probably leave the slide down for that cruise? If so, does that mean they will be reassembling it during our cruise? Or does anyone know if there are other plans? Not a huge deal either way, but I'm sure my kids would like to use it as well as all the other spring breakers.
