Service charge question

When NCL has their "Get up to 4 perks free!" promotion, I noticed that on the final invoice, there is a service charge for around $250? Is this normal? What is the service charge for? I see that if you refuse the "free" perks, the service charges go away.

Look at the terms carefully. It is "up to" four. The number that you get usually depends on the cabin category. You might have three with your cabin and are paying for the fourth for example.

You can't choose more than your cabin qualifies for. The charge is the gratuity on the dining or beverage package, as stated in the other answer.

That's because for free beverage plan and for free specialty dining there is an 18% gratuity on each plan on the value of the plan. If you don't take those perks then you don't pay those gratuities.

You are charge 18% gratuity on the retail cost of the Beverage and/or Dining package.

The perks are not really free. You have to pay the gratuities on the retail value of the drink package and the food package. You can split hairs if you want about the use of the word free, but you are not charged for the package, just the gratuities. If you don't want that to pay the gratuities I would expect that you can decline that part of the package.

We don't choose the drink package because we don't drink enough booze to make the approx. $14 per day per person worth it. The dining package is a "maybe", but the other perks that don't incur a gratuity are usually our choice. Free Service Charges, internet or other perks are what we usually take.

I don't like paying the extra charge, but when broken down to a per day charge for the drinks it is quite a bargain to me. Now, if you don't drink at all or have less than one a day this is not a good deal for you
