Any reason why Celebrity doesn't offer cruises to Asia in the Summer time?

I would like to consider a cruise out of Shanghai in two years as of our best friends will be moving to Beijing and live there for 2 years. Our vacations are already booked for this year and next year, so the next soonest time we can visit is early Summer of 2019. While reviewing the cruises that Celebrity offers out of Shanghai I noticed that there are all in the Spring or Fall. Due to our son's school schedule the earliest we can go is late May to mid August. If the weather is supposed to be warm in the summer months, why aren't there cruises during this time in Asia through Celebrity?

I believe summer is prime time for many of the cruise lines to deploy ships to Alaska and Europe. Alaska is really only a summer months thing and more families cruise Europe in summer so I believe it is just a matter sending ships where the money is.

I looked at other cruise lines and Royal Caribbean offers limited itineraries with the majority only 4-5 day cruises. Princess has amazing itineraries to Asia but they are at least 18 nights long, which we can't do because of our job schedules. Norwegian does not offer any. I guess for our limited time we might just have to with Royal. I was hoping for a 7-10 cruise out of Shanghai in June. Who knows, it is still 2 years away!

When would the 2019 Asia itineraries come out for Celebrity, this Fall?

Have a look at Cunard. They have world cruises broken into segments...something might fall into place. Also there is Star Cruises....We did a Star Cruise many years ago and found it quite different but not in a bad way...Have a word with a decent Travel Agent that organises Far Eastern tours.. they may be aware of far more cruise lines that do regularly cruise from Shanghai.

If you do decide to cruise RC remember that they do sell to the Chinese and Far Eastern market. We loved our cruise with RC from Hong Kong and enjoyed a far more diverse clientele than usual. Biggest differences we noticed were additional choices in Ocean View, emptier bars and busier casinos in the evenings.

As I said, we loved the diversity but were aware that others found the atmosphere 'different'.

I have visited Asia on land-based tours during the summer months. The weather was extremely hot and humid, with massive rains that flooded streets - no gentle rains, but rainfall so fierce that touristing was impossible on some days. (And I've lived in Florida, Hawaii, and Seattle, and traveled throughout the U.S., Asia, and Europe.) Combined with the heat and humidity, summer was a less than ideal season for Asia travel.

Monsoon weather in Asia is not very pleasant. This takes place in Summer. A cruise to Asia in Summer is not something most people will enjoy. Shanghai is a lovely city. We spend one week in Shanghai in April a couple of years ago. The weather was fine.

By the way this year in January we had to skip Koh Samui because of weather conditions and it rained so much in Bangkok that it was very difficult to walk. So I guess it will depend also in which part of Asia one is travelling.

Asia is not very nice in the summer. Southeast Asia is hot, often over 100 degrees F and the rain is drenching. Lots of bugs. Shanghai is like an oven and the smog is a killer. China is better up north near Beijing but, again, the smog is a problem. Not that long ago, the only place you could cruise in the summer was Alaska and Europe. The Caribbean was empty except for Carnival. Now, with so many ships deployed, the Caribbean is busy. Maybe as the popularity for cruising increases along with the number of ships, Asia may become a summer destination as well.

We have done a three week land tour/river cruise of China in September and a cruise out of Japan (most Japanese ports) that ended in Hong Kong in October/Nov. Based on my research, visiting Japan and China in the Summer is a big mistake. The weather is very hot.

My first trip to Asia was in 1981 and I visited Thailand, Hong Kong and the Philippines in August. The trip was nice and it was a lot of fun, but we had to change clothes every day due to perspiration.

I understand the business decision behind it with a limited number of ships. However I am not worried about the weather since we live in Florida and we are used to rain everyday in the Summer with temperatues in the high 90s, low 100s in the Summer time. But if the weather is worse maybe we should consider Spring Break time instead.
