Visa for Shanghai

Currently on the Millennium with many disgruntled Australians, French, Germans, Scandinavians who had been told they needed visas and paid a fortune for the privilege of being able to go ashore in Shanghai. Fortunately Celebrity UK gave us the correct info. All passengers on Celebrity tours receive the visa as part of the package. We had a great tour and immigration was simple. We are pleased to have saved a lot of money.

I didn't know visa's were that expensive for China...I thought they were $150 (ish) for americans, and $50 (ish) for all other countries??

My figures are probably outdated...we went about 5 years ago and that is my recollection of costs back then.

(and a small side note...I doubt Celebrity paid for your visa without charging you at least what they were charged, PLUS a little profit for them...but that is just a guess on my part)

I'm thinking we paid about $250 USD pp for your 10 year visa's for China. I knew about the 144 hour visa, but I decided that we should go with the 10 year visa. The 144 hour visa is only for the greater Shanghai area. We plan to travel to other parts of China in the future.

No charge at all for the group visa obtained by Celebrity on our behalf. Some Americans bought the visa because of its 10 year validity which makes sense. Australians paid a small fortune for an unnecessary one day visa and are furious. One family allegedly forked out nearly 2000 dollars.

We did Hong Kong to Shanghai in March and spent more than the 144 hours in China so we needed Chinese visas. We paid $144 per person for the visa plus $69 to the visa service. Getting a China visa involves two separate trips to the embassy/consulate a few days apart and you must go the the office designated by the Chinese. For us the office was in NYC and the cost of two trips to NYC --gas, tolls, parking etc plus the time involved made it cheaper to just use the visa service. No it is not cheap but as others have said, the visa is good for 10 years.

It's not really a visa, rather a visa waiver. China added a special no-cost waiver for authorized tours around the beginning of Oct 2016. Unfortunately, we had already paid about $200 per person (including agent fees) for our visas well before the new waiver was announced.

Yes. Outdated. I paid around $350AUD as I had to also use a specialist courier for the passport as we didn't have an embassy in my state. At the time they were required (2014)
