Hey, us Californians have to pay airfare to cruise out of the East coast, just like you have to when cruising out of our coast. Our flight for our upcoming November cruise (Carnval) out of New Orleans is costing nearly as much as our balcony cabin. We sure could use more options.

You will have to lower the operating costs imposed on the cruise lines in order to compete with Louisiana, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, and Maryland.

Every ship we have sailed on out of Cali was cheaper than a Caribbean cruise because there is less demand. Not sure adding ships would help that.

 

 

Kind of a simple answer to this . If there were demand for more cruises from the West Coast the cruise lines would be sending more ships there . They are in business to make money. Where are the additional going to go. ?

Quick question . Why are you going to New Orleans to cruise. ? Why not save the airfare and take a cruise from one of the west coast ports ?

Royals competitors are increasing capacity and Carnival is investing heavily in Long Beach.

And just how do they know there isn't a demand if they don't try :confused:.....How well the pacific coastal's sell out when RCI has done them from San Pedro should give them an idea.

It's not just about selling out. It's about selling out at maximum profit with minimum costs, and apparently RCI believes they can do that elsewhere.

They did try with Mariner and Monarch. They decided they could make more money elsewhere.

Mariner was bad timing..H1N1 virus hit Mexico along with the violence. Vision always did great here.

How do you quantify "great"? Sold out does not necessarily mean great. One has to consider operating costs there (which several people in this thread indicates are quite high). Also, what was the average passenger charge per room on these "great" cruises compared to other locations where ships are based? How much onboard spending was done? Do you have data to back up this claim of "great"?

I live in So Calif and our first cruise was the Mexican Riviera, I would not want to continue cruising that same route. For those living on the East Coast, you have a similar situation with the same Ports over & over to the Caribbean. We would love a RCCL ship over here but our choices are very limited. Now I would love to seem RCCL do a RT Alaska like Princess.

The demand is there just look at the port schedules of LA, LB, and SD. Also look at the recent announcements by Carnival corp, Larger ships coming to LA and LB plus the expansion and investment of LB Dome. Royal will not retrofit their fleet to cold iron. They are using California to show other ports. Boston, England and China are looking or where looking at cold ironing. Royal has told them we will take are business else where BYE BYE. Simple business decision of not increasing operating cost.

Summer of 2007 and 2008 a inside room for Vision was 1000pp on a 7 day MR so Royal repositioned Mariner to the 7 day MR starting 2/2009. A passenger increase of 679 per week. Probably not a wise business decision if it was just OK.

It obviously wasn't a wise business decision or they'd still be there.

Because they will not retrofit their existing ships for cold ironing. Thats why Mariner was pulled from LA. The law was phased in starting 2010 Cruise ships where among the first. Mariner left LA 1/2011
