Optotronics Posted October 31, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 31, 2017 Martinique is one of our ports of call and they say the US dollar is not accepted here. Where does everyone exchange the USD for the euro? Who has the best exchange rate?
memoak Posted October 31, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 31, 2017 ATM's are generally your best bet - but make sure it is a bank ATM to make sure you get a decent exchange rate

Where does everyone exchange the USD for the euro?Who has the best exchange rate? When we were in Martinique, March 2017, US$ were accepted by the vendors near the dock and on the main street along the waterfront. We did not need Euros. There is a large flea market building right along the waterfront. Credit cards are also accepted. Th Euro is a stable currency. I wouldn't worry too much about the exchange rate. If you really want some I would use an ATM.
memoak Posted October 31, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 31, 2017 I usually only worry about the exchange rate at places like airports or train stations where some of the ATM's are not tied to a bank and usually have worse exchange rates
easyboy Posted October 31, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 31, 2017 We bring Euros in small amount exchanged from home for small expense/purchases and use mostly our credit card with no forex transaction. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Sent from my iPhone using Forums This is what we do as well. I find we get the best exchange rate at home from our own bank, then a card with no fee for foreign currency exchange for larger purchases is the best approach. This overall makes it easier to monitor my purchases in port. You still of course need to understand the local currency and what you are being charged. firecrewcapt Posted October 31, 2017 #7 Share Posted October 31, 2017 If we need to get Euros or Pesos or ? we always do it at home at our local bank branch that does currency exchange, usually a better rate and if in Europe use an atm outside of a bank. cloveygrl Posted November 1, 2017 #8 Share Posted November 1, 2017 Be very very careful with ATMs - bluetooth skimmers are everywhere where there are a lot of tourists and those stand alone unmonitored ATMs.
