Iceland credit cards

Recommended Posts

I've read that credit cards are the way to pay for everything in Iceland. In Lonely Planet book, it mentioned credit cards need to have a "pin" I'd like more info from people in the US who have been there. Our credit card does not have a pin. HELP:o

You only need a PIN in Iceland with a credit card if you are buying gasoline from an unmanned station. Stations in usual tourist areas are always manned during regular business hours so this only comes up late at night or in distance corners of Iceland like the Westfjords

As Nitemare notes, chip and pin in Europe only becomes an issue in self serve places like train station automated ticket machines and unattended gasoline stations. If there is a human working you are okay.

My CC allowed me to set a pin through my online account, check there if you are concerned.

We spent a week in Iceland in March & only used the pin for gas.

We had no cash on us at all. Cards are accepted widely.
